Mangalore, Jul 3: Two days after Daijiworld carried a special report on the menace caused by vehicles blaring horns on city roads, especially by buses using pressure horns, city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh directed the RTO to take stringent action against violators.
Seemanth Kumar, who read the report on Daijiworld and sensed the outrage among readers, acted immediately, and said that he has instructed the regional transport officer (RTO) to keep track of the issue and take necessary steps.
As per the order, RTO officers on Tuesday July 3 stopped vehicles, especially city buses, and warned the drivers of strict action if they do not remove pressure horns immediately.
On Sunday July 1, Daijiworld published a report on the adverse effects of indiscriminate and loud honking, especially by commercial vehicles which use pressure horns. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, improper use of horns, using shrill and pressure horns and honking in silence zones are punishables offences.
On Tuesday, the RTO along with other staff intercepted city buses near Bhagingi Samaj, Morgan's Gate and other areas. Cases were also registered against buses that have a high intensity horns fitted in them.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Seemanth Kumar Singh said that despite warning commercial vehicles several times and removing and seizing the pressure horns, they are fitted back and used over and over again. Terming it 'cheap' on the part of the vehicle owners, he said that if it continues, the licence of the erring driver would be cancelled.
"We will keep a record of all the erring vehicles and their drivers. If the drivers violate the rule, we will seize their licence, and if the same vehicle driven by a new driver is caught using such horns, we will cancel the permit," he said.
