Bangalore, Dec 14: The State Government will set up an agriculture price commission to evolve a balanced and integrated price structure for agricultural and horticultural commodities for producers as well as consumers by next month.

Karnataka’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters that the chairman and other members of the commission would be appointed in the next 15 days.

The commission shall have a chairman, two official members, one progressive farmer and one member secretary, Jayachandra, who is heading the Cabinet sub-committee on agriculture price commission, said.

The term of the commission is three years and it would be given a 12-point framework to look into various aspects of commodities and prices, the minister said.

The committee would hold another round of meeting and finalise the constitution of the commission and submit the same to the approval of the Chief Minister.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiha would appoint all the commission members and its chairman, the minister said.

The Cabinet sub-committee, which held its first meeting, sought more information from experts on fixing prices of various commodities.

The commission would also help establishing a well-organised marketing system for handling agricultural commodities and create adequate market infrastructure to undertake storage, transportation and processing efficiently.

The commission would suggest to the government to take suitable measures as and when the prices of agricultural produces fall down suddenly.

The cabinet sub-committee collected information by consulting farmers, their representatives and agriculture economists and study them in depth before constituting the commission, Jayachandra added.
