Didn't choose to be born in this family: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS): Asserting that "we are battle ready and we are going to win", Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Monday said in his first television interview that he was not thirsting for power but was out to "change the system" that would open up opportunities for young people, empower women and make India a manufacturing hub of the world. He also said Modi governent was "abetting and pushing" the 2002 riots.

In an over one hour interview with Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Times Now news channel, Gandhi said he did not choose to be born a Gandhi but was a "serious politician" who stood for "opening up the system" and the election this time would be fought between those who want "deepening of democracy" and those who stood for "concentration of power".

"The real issue is that I didn't choose to be born in this family, I didn't sign up and say that I like to be born in this family... It happened, so the choice in front of me is pretty simple... I can either turn around and say okay I will just walk away from this thing and leave it alone, or I can say I can try and improve something," he said.

He deflected pointed questions thrown at him regarding corruption by Congress party governments, whether in New Delhi or in the states, but said that "anyone who does any act of corruption will be punished". But he sidestepped questions on why the Congress failed to act against former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan or Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh who had been implicated in corrupt deals.

Gandhi took potshots at Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, saying his government was "abetting and pushing" the 2002 riots and the BJP believes "in concentration of power in hands of one man".

Gandhi described Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal as "a leader of an opposition party like many others."

"There is absolutely nothing I am scared of," Gandhi said in between volley of questions related to Modi but avoided answering a question on whether he would agree to a direct debate with Modi. "We are debating the issues everyday..." he said plainly.

Several times in the interview, Gandhi, 43, said his focus was on empowering people, particularly women, bringing in youngsters in Congress and taking everyone together.

The Congress scion said that he was not "driven by the desire for power" and was an "anomaly in the environment" he was in.

Gandhi did not directly answer persistent questions about Modi's jibes at him.

"The BJP has prime ministerial candidate, the BJP believes in concentration of power in the hands of one person, I fundamentally disagree with that, I believe in democracy, I believe in opening up the system. I believe in the RTI, I believe in giving power to our people. We have fundamentally different philosophies," he said.

He said the Gujarat government was "actually abetting and pushing" the 2002 riots and the difference with the 1984 riots was that during the anti-Sikh riots the then Congress government "was trying to stop the killing" while Modi's government was "allowing" it to happen.

Gandhi also acknowledged that "some Congress men were probably involved" in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that followed the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Asked if he would apologise for the riots in which more than 3,000 Sikhs were killed in Delhi, Gandhi veered away from the topic.

Asked how Modi government was "aiding and abetting the riots" since the court has given him a clean chit, Gandhi said: "I mean it's not me...it's the large number of people who were there, large number of people who saw actively the Government of Gujarat being involved in the riots."

On the Congress preparedness for the battle ahead, Gandhi said: "I think we will defeat the BJP in the next elections."

Gandhi also dwelt on the pain of the circumstances in which he grew up.

"In my life, I have seen my grandmother die, I have seen my father die, I have seen my grandmother go to jail and I have actually been through a tremendous amount of pain as a child when these things happen to you.

"I don't actually keep invoking my family name, I have mentioned my family name once or twice and then people report that," Gandhi said in response to a query.

He said that "every single thing" he has done in his political career has been to bring in youngsters. "I am absolutely against the concept of dynasty, anybody who knows me knows that and understands that."

But, in the same breath, he said that it cannot be wished away as it is a closed system. Gandhi said he did not get driven by the desire for power. "For me power is an instrument that can be used for certain things... it's not interesting to own it, to capture it or to hold it."

"Maybe it's because of my family circumstances and what happened to my family. Power per se, the quest for power, the thirst for power is not there in me. What is there in me, is a desire, a strong desire to reduce the pain that people feel," he added.

"Frankly in a lot of ways, I am an anomaly in the environment that I'm in."

Gandhi said that Congress had decided to support AAP in forming government in Delhi to see how much they prove themselves.

"We thought we would assist them, because our party felt we should give them a chance to prove themselves and one can see what they are doing and one can see exactly how much they have proved themselves," Gandhi said. Gandhi rejected the contention that the party had propped AAP to divide anti-Congress vote.

Gandhi said his dream was to make the country powerful. "I want to reject the way we do politics," he stated. Asked if he was not named a prime ministerial candidate of his party because he feared defeat, he shot back: "Defeat just makes me stronger" and said he took victory or defeat in his stride and was here for the long term and will not run away.

Gandhi to said India has to look at manufacturing . “We have already set up the corridors north, south, east and west, how we can take the energy of the Indian people and build a manufacturing superhouse.”

“I want to put India on the manufacturing map, I want to make this the centre of manufacturing in the world. I want to make this place at least as much as a manufacturing power as China," Gandhi said.

Durgadas Suvarna, Bangalore/Mangalore, Dont make comments without knowing the facts. I have been travelling all over India and I am a frequent visitor to Baroda. You have not seen Gujarat. Go and deep down to the villages.. See what Feku's developments. When malnourished female babies in Gujarat were shown to Feku Modi, Feku said that the girls are beauty conscious and hence they don't drink milk and therefore they all malnourished. In the name of development, he evacuated millions of tribal and poor people, but has failed to rehabilitate them. He gaged them with authority. RBI Governor R.Rajan had made it very clear "Modi's Gujrat development model is bluff to the core - Gujrat ranks 13th in the list of Indian states on development indicator". RSS made him popular after 2002 riots in Gujrat as they liked it and it's their dream to divide India. Courts have vindicated the mass murderer as he and his agents have eliminated all the evidences as he his holding the powerful chair of CM in Gujrat. When literate and critical observers started calling his bluff's, his goons started attacking them physically and this the democracy of Modi and his intolerant supporters. He hired American public relations agencies and spending millions of rupees to bluff people and employing every media including Arnab's Times Now! and social media channels. I am frustrated to see people with less knowledge supporting the wrong person for a very highly responsible post!
Modi is an empty vessel, hollow liar and feku and to me he is joker!!

Rahul has had a protected, secure life full of bodyguards like Mukesh Ambanis sons. As such he does not know about the daily problems of the common man. But Rahul seems like a approachable person who has some degree of genuineness and concern to change the system that he kept mentioning about. Whereas our feku who only knows to taunt and mock others. FEKU ran away from an interview by Karan Thapar. He did not have the guts to face his questions. So who is more daring?

Why are they comparing a young politician with an Old Hag.
Modi is experienced in age yet inexperienced in Politics. What is Arnab asking him about Sikh riots in 1984 when he was just 14 years then. Also about the Gujarat riots, he was still young. Ask the seasoned politicians who were there. One cant compare the two Modi and Rahul, its like comparing chalk with cheese. Maybe people were not able to understand his level of English. By Arnab asking about his education maybe he wanted to tell all that he studied in Cambridge. All irrelevant questions. Give Rahul some time. He will prove himself.

Rahuljee disappointed.Priyanka certainly would have done 100% better.I am not ashamed to say I am a Congress supporter. But Rahul disappointed us in his first interview. he showed his inexperience in handling questions thrown at him. I would have answered all those questions 10 times better.
Having said that, I still believe Rahul has good intent and good character, unlike NaMo.But I cannot imagine this Rahul Gandhi taking care of this great nation, nor can I imagine him talking international issues and leaders. No way!
Though I personally dislike NaMo, I think he deserves a chance this time.Anyway, we have a Kejriwal to hold Modi ki lagaam. It will be good for the nation to vote for Namo.

13 out of 16 provincial committees were in favour Sardar Patel, but he withdrew at the advice of Gandhi. So, Nehru became the Prime Minister.

Sardar's priority was to build the nation at that critical juncture and not petty politics.

Rahul is no where near Sardar, Nehru or Indira Gandhi.

At this juncture only Modi can match the above leaders.

Here some readers are desperately finding substance in Rahul's interview. But, they can not make a black cat white.

" Rahul Gandhi's interview". The most honest and sincere interview one has ever witnessed. We have a bunch of idiots here who would dispute same cos its a case of "grapes are sour".
He is a thorough Gentleman. One can see the sincerity in him. He never spoke a word against Modi or the opposition which the opposition always does. Why don't we take the good from what he said.
Another reason and a major disease to talk against him is Jealousy cos he belongs to the Gandhi family. There are many who are against the 'Gandhi' name itself. What wrong have they done other than sacrifice their lives for the country. He's given his views on same and that's the truth. One doesn't see the greed for power in him. He said he can either walk away or do something to change the system. What are we doing other than sitting here and commenting. He isn't manipulative and scheming and speaks straight from the heart. What Dynasty are we talking about when he is sacrificing his family life by not getting married and having a dozen kids to carry forward the dynastic rule. With him its the end to the Gandhi family.
Guess he should give it all up and enjoy life than give up his blood for an ungrateful lot.
If I wish Rahul Gandhi does not become the PM its just for one reason, at least his life will be safe. He can work behind the scenes like his mother, but at times only Power gives one the authority to effect the changes. He's trying his best, but in a system like ours its very hard. Anyway, ALL THE BEST RAHUL.

The true colors of RG have finally come out. He has no knowledge of what is truly happening in the country and the real issues faced by the people. As many in the country suspected, he does not know what to talk and what not to talk. In many ways he is same as his father Rajiv, who was a pilot and got thrown into politics and finally PM. At least, the people of this country finally got to hear RG and came to know how much of a "buddhu" he is. Really!! He should not be in politics. He has no clue what the country is facing. I feel so sad for the people in his party rallying around him and touting him as their PM candidate. All those are equally "buddhus".
This Congress needs to be routed and kicked out. RG is not fit to be elected either. He should fade away from public life and do something else in life. Some of his answers to fairly serious questions seems to project that he is in a fairy land!!

Just shows that he was born with a silver spoon and is so disconnected with how common folks are living in the country.

Kudos to Arnab for a fantastic interview.

we can not give them another chance and make it worst,
so only alternative is NDA, we have to give them one term , teach a lesson to UPA that, if they fail to give good Govt, they are going to pay for it.
BJP always projected their PM candidate before election, not like Cong's.
And Modi is eligible leader, he has chosen in his state for 3rd time, no one can force whole state to choose him for 3rd time, yes i can agree that, we can force to vote some percentage of voter. but with that he can not be CM know.

you can go on listing the bad thing of NDA and only good things of UPA,
And you keep on asking voters not to vote for BJP.
But let me tell you, what ever you and your young PM candidate(already 43 , but still young as per Congs ad's) you can not form the Govt this time, some blind followers can vote for them, but not all are blind.
i can assure you , this general election will be seen as, worst ever for Cong's.
    Just like Delhi.
please ask the voter to vote for Cong's. i hope every one thinks like you.

The wisest man and a gentleman I have ever seen.. Stupid arnab repeatedly asks stupid question about losing to modi or scared of modi and having a debate. Y should rahul have a debate. Modi is only good for criticizing congress their leaders and arguing and talking stupid things and having a debate. Doesn't even know proper English . We don't want a pm with lack of English spoken language.who only knows to blabber and criticize and curse soniaji or rahul or manmohan singh.oh ya he is good at running away from the interview drinking a glass of water. Speaking about rahul avoiding the modi questions .Well, he answered them as a gentleman he dint call names and accuse and trash talk about bjp or modi. Unlike what modi would do.that's the difference and the upbringing.. he may have gotten clean chit for Gujarat riots.but he won't be able to escape god's punishment . When karma strikes . Rahul Gandhi interview was very meaningful, relevant & focused on the future of India.

Unlike Modi, who always talks about the history(Self made) & spends 90% of his speech in criticizing others, Rahul spoke about how he wants to build the country. One does not require to give only hate speech & condemn others to build his image.

At least he did not run away from the interview when the questions being asked on the 1984 riots.

Whereas our Feku on the number of occasions runaway from the middle of the interview when the questions on Gujrat riots being raised.

You must watch Fekus interview with Karan Tapar of CNN-IBN, NDTV & one with News headlines and see how he runs away like a coward when such questions being asked.

Modi is a coward, if he is a brave, why did he need Z security in his own country? He speaks big and Media is glorifying him as the future hope of the country as Media is paid for that. Arnab is always foolish and he is BJP agent. In his other programs he always does not allow congress spokesperson to speak and clarify the points. In yesterday's interview also he was asking certain foolish questions. As a Media person Arnab should be a responsible person and ask question related to the development of the country. Rahul clearly speaks avoid unnecessary unrelated things. His concern in to bring youngsters to main stream and empowering woman and also make India a manufacturing center in the world. Media has always projected Rahul Gandhi as weak and childish. In yesterday's interview Rahul proved that he is intelligent, dedicated, honest and shrewd politician and he is the hope of strong India. The Constitution of India is in English (translated in Hindi too). Your Indian Passport is in English (with Hindi translations). The Indian Penal code is in English. Banking and business transactions in India are in English. Most higher education institutions are only in English medium. Most people in South India (Tamil Nadu & Kerala) neither know nor understand much Hindi, they prefer to use English as a link language.

English is bloody well the most used language here if you wish to get any work done.

I am not surprised with the reactions of Sangh supporters here as they hate Nehru Gandhi family because they know this family is only hindrance to their road to power . Whatever fake stories they create about Rahul, he has shown his maturity. Unlike Prime Minister nominee, not even once he attacked opponents. His interview was dignified and this can come only with the persons having good background.

He mainly talked about what his visions are and did not give any importance about questions which does not concern common man. He talked straight and at no point of time lost his temper even during uncomfortable questions.

Rajiv Gandhi had dreams and he could realize some of his dreams which helped millions of Indians. This youngster has some dreams and I am sure this will help the country.

I wonder what this !diot pappu has done (for the country) in the last 10 years. High moral standards, deep rooted patriotism, honesty of efforts and total commitment can only change the scenario and he miss the whole point in his so called interview. As we all know India has been suffering from rampant corruption for years, taking it downward and definitely corruption is the first offspring of low moral standards that need to be eradicated in a well planned manner, but this much I can say that such change can't be brought by blood suckers like SCAMGRESS and opportunists lIke AAPtards in this country.

Rahul gandhi was literally sweating in a cold winter night, even when Arnab was going so and so easy on him.

Rahul Gandhi said "I did not choose to be born in Gandhi family". How can someone be so ignorant! Being in Gandhi family is the only achievement he has had in his lifetime.

By the way Rahul was perspiring a bit because of the heat Arnab was generated from his frustration at not being able to succeed in putting words in Rahul's mouth.

During the interview, Rahul claims that only in Congress there is democracy, and in other parties power is concentrated with few people. What can be more untrue than this? In BJP, a tea seller could work hard and come to the top. In Congress, can anyone dream of getting the reigns of the party other than Rahul's family? It is Sonia and Rahul who controls the party, mother is president, son is vice president, and their appointed puppet is PM.One thing's for sure. Rahul Gandhi is a prototype for all those qualities that the PM of a country should NOT have. Thank you Arnab Goswami, even though you left out critical questions relating to Robert Vadra. If Rahul has agreed for this interview for his 'image makeup', he failed miserably. The interview exposed Rahul's hollowness in the fight against corruption, when he evaded the question why his party CM in Maharashtra Chavan is protected in Adharsh scam in spite of SIT report against him.

Rahul needs to do more homework and sharpen his political acumen if he has any intentions to stay! There are no 'quarters asked nor given' in a political battlefield and Rahul'd better know that! You cannot be 'silver spoon fed' all the time here and shouldn't expect it also!
    to also.

And Arnab should know that as a journalist/media man you need to be politically neutral, i.e. just report the truth as it is and not put your personal opinions/spin on it in favour of your personal/channel's choice or else you get exposed like you got exposed once again in yesterday's interview and then you begin to look like a fool. No quarter given in any profession nowadays !

    @Declan....
The onus is not on Arnab. Be Fair.
The 'man of the moment' was Rahul.
Let there be a fair assessment with no inclination or prejudice whatsoever. If Rahul had known and if his advisors had indeed guided him (the way you cast aspersions on Arnab) he would not have agreed for the interview in the first place! Arnab's assessment is of very little importance when compared to that of an Congress V.P....don't you agree?

Are you not aware of the saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword" which in today's times would be "The microphone is more mightier than the sword" ?

Media can be very dangerous. They can very easily misguide the public with biased or false reporting. Politicians and leaders have been known to manipulate the media or at least sections of the media. Media through their biased reporting can so easily build up a person's reputation or destroy it in quick time.

Therefore Arnab's actions/assessments are very, very relevant whether he is VP or CEO. Please don't be in a hurry to give Arnab a clean chit.
