Chennai, Aug 4: Fear of another tsunami returned to Chennai on Friday when rumours fuelled by unusually choppy sea along the coastline kept the fishermen, residents, the police and the Coast Guard on tenterhooks.

Regional Meteorological Centre quickly dispelled rumours because they “id not sense any earthquake activity anywhere close enough to send tsunami waves into the country’s eastern shore.”

However, word spread about a possible tsunami when fishermen found that some of their boats were washed out. The sea water formed a small pond in the Marina beach opposite Vivekananda Illam.

The fears intensified when the sea continued to be rough and waves reached heights of five feet.

Chennai Collector and Corporation Commissioner visited the beach. A Coast Guard ship also patrolled the sea close to the coast.
