Mangalore, Dec 27: Doctors of Kasturba Medical College here have achieved yet another milestone in the field of interventional cardiology, a press release from KMC chief operating officer Sunil Deshpande stated.
A large aneurysm of the right leg artery was closed using a modern device by a technique which avoided operation in a patient at Manipal Heart Centre at city's KMC Hospital. This is the first such procedure performed in the city, by a team of doctors led by Dr Yusuf Kumble.
Aneurysm is a localized swelling of an artery. It has a thin wall which gets progressively thinner and eventually burst and a patient can bleed to death. Hitherto, the only treatment was an operation which would last for several hours.
Mohammud, aged 58 years, was suffering from severe right leg pain and was not able to even lie down since three weeks. He was diagnosed with a large aneurysm of right thigh blood vessel which was leaking and causing swelling and pain.
A team of doctors had exhaustive discussions regarding treatment of the patient. Though surgery was the primary option, because of high risk in dealing with such a large aneurysm, doctors decided to close it by an interventional technique. As it was a new technique and access was from the opposite leg, it was a challenging task. However, KMC Hospital’s Cardiologist Dr Yusuf Kumble and team performed this task and closed this aneurysm using a “Stent Graft”. The patient's condition improved within 24 hours and was he discharged from the hospital, stated the press release.
'Facing new challenges in the field of interventional cardiology is very interesting and satisfying. The expert and eminent cardiologists’ team of KMC hospital took the challenge and did the procedure. We are geared up to take up any challenge in the field of Interventional Cardiology,' Dr Yusuf Kumble stated in the release.
'It is yet another milestone in global health challenge. By this we are at par with any other global hospitals. KMC hospital is soon going to add a new Digital Cath Lab in the Manipal Heart Institute at city's KMC Hospital,' stated Dr Sunil Deshpande.
