Hooch Tragedy: Nine Excise Dept Officials Suspended

Bangalore, May 21: An Executive Committee meeting chaired by Governor Rameshwar Thakur reviewed the situation arising out of the liquor tragedy and decided to suspend officials of Excise Department in Kolar, Bangalore and Bangalore rural, official sources said.  

Nine officials of Karnataka State Excise Department, including a Deputy Commissioner and three Superintendents, were placed under suspension on the charge of deriliction of duty in connection with the liquor tragedy which claimed more than 100 lives in different parts of Karnataka since May 18.

An Executive Committee meeting chaired by Governor Rameshwar Thakur reviewed the situation arising out of the liquor tragedy and decided to suspend officials of Excise Department in Kolar, Bangalore and Bangalore rural, official sources said.

Those who faced the disciplinary action included C P Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, G Venkataramanaiah, SP, Excise Intelligence Bureau, G Somashekharappa, SP, Jayanagar and G R Srinivas, SP, Kolar, the sources said.
 
Lakshminarayana, Inspector, Asha (Sub-Inspector), Shankar Prasad (Sub-Inspector), Ramamani (Sub-Inspector) and S M Bukari (Sub-Inspector) were the others to be suspended.

The governor also ordered payment of Rs 50,000 relief to the families of those who died.
