Mangalore, May 28: Complaining that the gravel mixing plant set up near Adyar in connection with the widening of the national highway is polluting the region, locals staged a protest in front of the unit on Tuesday May 27.
The gravel mixing plant is located on a field in Adyar. The mixing plant incessantly produces clouds of dust, causing heavy air pollution. It is alleged, that this also pollutes water bodies and the environment. The dust which settles on the vegetation, has adversely affected agriculture and vegetable cultivation. Because of the forced consumption of dust, people are suffering from ailments relating to lungs and skin.The protestors also said, that the buildings around the area are coated with a thin film of gravel dust, and that their colour coatings have faded.
The protestors have appealed to the deputy commissioner, people's representatives and the Pollution Control Board to initiate action against the said mixing plant immediately.
