India on track to stay among fastest growing economies: IMF

Washington, Aug 8 (IANS): Observing that India'a near-term macroeconomic outlook is "broadly favorable", the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that the country is on course to hold its position as one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

Following its Executive Board's assessment concluded last month, the IMF said on Tuesday that key risks to the Indian economy include higher oil prices, tightening global financial conditions and tax revenue deficits.

"The near-term macroeconomic outlook is broadly favorable. Growth is forecast to rise to 7.3 per cent in FY2018/19 and 7.5 per cent in FY2019/20, on strengthening investment and robust private consumption," an IMF release said.

"Headline inflation is projected to rise to 5.2 per cent in FY2018/19, as demand conditions tighten, along with the recent depreciation of the rupee and higher oil prices, housing rent allowances, and agricultural minimum support prices."

IMF mission chief for India Ranil Salgado said the Indian economy at present is like "an elephant starting to run".

Continuing structural reforms would be key to high growth, he said, adding that further rationalisation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would give maximum benefits, while labour reforms would be an incentive for companies to expand.

Underlining India's importance for the world economy, the IMF India Staff Report also said the country accounts for about 15 per cent of global growth.

Persistently high retail inflation expectations, large government fiscal deficits and debt remain key macroeconomic challenges, the multilateral financing agency said.

"Systemic macrofinancial risks persist, as the weak credit cycle could impair growth and the sovereign-bank nexus has created vulnerabilities," it said.

Domestic risks pertain to tax revenue shortfalls related to continued GST implementation issues and delays in addressing the twin balance sheet problems and other structural reforms," it added.

The IMF also said that the Reserve Bank of India should be given full supervisory powers over government-owned banks, while the legal independence of RBI must also be clarified.

The report also recommended higher private sector participation in Indian banking.

Ranil Salgado, the IMF Releaser man, is a Sri Lankan.

The Release is merely a feel-good statement - with a great headline. But there is nothing out of the ordinary in the details.

"Growth is forecast to rise to 7.3 per cent in FY2018/19 and 7.5 per cent in FY2019/20". But what is the basis for this optimistic forecast?

The growth depends "on strengthening investment and robust private consumption".

And if there is little investment, and not-so-robust consumption?

The reality is that, over the next two years, the foreign exchange remittances (especially from GCC) are expected to take quite a bit of a hit.

In the eyes of IMF as well as in the presence of the World Bank Financiers, India is certainly moving towards the right direction, but we have a long way to go towards achieving the basic success. This is mainly due to our ever-increasing population of India. When we earned the Independence from the British in 1947, our population without East and West Pakistan was slightly above 300 million people. Today our population in India has risen more than 1300 million people. This is a shocking matter because this staggering growth in population has brought acute scarcities in all our basic needs of food, medicine, water, power and also the basic needs of hygiene. Our schools are overloaded, and so also our roads, hospitals, bus stations and even parks and recreations. This population explosion has also deteriorated our pollution controls, traffic emissions and also our need for more cleaner food and water, and even our shelter.

India is no doubt a God fearing country, and with the fear of God we manage to somehow preserve our secular values and have known how to respect one another regardless of our faith, our language and also our culture. God has taught us how to live peacefully and happily in spite of all our daily burdens and responsibilities.

India has been blessed with some of the finest and wisest men and women who have learned the technique of peaceful co-existence, and we still have the virtues of mutual respect for each other because of the teaching and preaching of leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Mother Theresa and many more.

India is an unique country filled with wise people and noble people. We have to somehow find ways and means to control our population so that we can control our economy, and also control our ever-growing population.

If we are a God fearing ( I thought God loving is a more preferred expression, but looks like you have reserved it for your host country) country and if that fear has taught us to be peaceful and happy no matter how adverse the conditions/ground realities are, then what are you cribbing about? What if the population is exploding, what if we our schools and roads are crowded and what if we lack basic health care and civic infrastructure? We are HAPPY and PEACEFUL as per you! Don't you think you are being a bit hypocritical and self contradicting in this piece?

    Economy is a continuous process...
It is not like term to term politics...
Policies of the old government are not theirs alone...
Policies of current government may not remain theirs...
But we have a firewall to all political thrusts...
We have a system firmly in place...
Corp-orates and right minded individuals have made us proud again...
    Great going
Let us only be a bit more human
    Bit more tolerant...
