Dubai, Feb 13: It was spectacular exhibition of sport, full of spirit. A beautiful day with wonderful weather for the Thowball and Volleyball tourney organized by Milagreans Kallianpur turned out to be a huge success with a disciplined players and supportive audience. The event ,held on Friday Feb 13, 2009 at Sharjah Wanderers Club, was in support of the college building back home in Kallianpur.
Mangalore Konkans won their second straight forward title within three weeks. They displayed their best at the throw ball competition with their ace players captain Pricilla Soares and Maria Monteiro winning two individual performance titles. They defeated spirited Bunts Dubai by 14-8, 14-6 straight sets to clinch the title.
Ace Spikers, with their well disciplined play, displayed mixed smashes, lifts and defensive play to defeat hosts Milagreans in three straight sets to win the men's volleyball tourney.
The event began around 9-15am with a welcome Speech by Melwyn Lewis, followed by an introduction session by Gilbert Aranaha. President Jason Correa addressed the crowd by explaining the motto and significance of KUMOKH ( Kallianpureans United Mission Offering Knowledge and Help). He also thanked Gilbert, Aloysius, Stanley, Thomas and Novi for their support. Fr Valerian Mendonca blessed and inaugurated the event by sharing his valuable words of wisdom and experience. He released into the skies the Indian Tri-colour balloons. As a symbolic gesture of freedom and peace, Vinay Lewis, Jason Correa, Melwyn Lewis and Fr Valerian Mendonca released doves .
The men’s volleyball and women’s throw ball matches commenced immediately after the inaugural session. There were around 10 volleyball and 6 throw ball teams, with matches being conducted in 5 different courts. The ground was filled with crowds cheering . DJ Ash Lewis kept the whole audience in good cheer as they enjoyed good weather, good sport and hot cups of tasty tea served to all.
The crowd enjoyed the food served at the vegetarian and non-vegetarian counters catered by Canara Restaurant, Karama . Vinay Lewis ,Gulf Voice of Mangalore ,with his melodious voice entertained the crowd with Hindi and Konkani numbers. With all league matches over before lunch, the mega finale was awaited after lunch.
At the post lunch session, the semi-finals and final matches continued with a lot of spirit and enthusiasm. Obviously the best team deserved to win, and it was Mangalore Konkans who bagged the winning title defeating Bunts Dubai. In the Women’s Throw ball category , Ace Spikers bagged the winning title defeating Milagreans A in the Men’s Volleyball category. It was a close finish between the four finalists , who displayed true team spirit.
The Prize distribution ceremony began by felicitating the main sponsors Mr. Nelson Dsouza (FINE TRADE INTERNATIONAL FZC) and Lancy Martha(Integrated Freight and Logistics LLC) and all the supporters of the tournament. Dinesh Kunder , Customs Officer from Bajpe International Airport was the chief guest. Walter Nandalike felicitated Vinay Lewis (Gulf voice of Mangalore-a Milagrean) and Jason Fernandes (editor www.milagreans.com). Trophies were awarded to winners and the runners up teams and individual prizes and special prizes to the star performers were also given away.
Melroy D’souza Secretary Milagreans proposed the vote of thanks, Gilbert Aranha compered the whole event . www.daijiworld.com and 105.4 FM spice radio were the official media partners. The programme concluded with the lucky dip draw and many exciting prizes were won which included 32’ LCD TV and JVC DVD system. Over 15 consolation prizes were drawn and won in the lucky dip . The victory cry of the Milagreans echoed throughout the area. Sudhakar Alva, Clara Fernandes, Moidin and his troupe were the match officials.
