Mangalore, Jun 2: A help desk has been set up for the convenience of those who face problems in registering their complaints at the police stations, to be able to register the First Information Reports (FIR) without any hitch, at the office of the superintendent of police here. The desk was opened on Tuesday June 2.

District superintendent of police(SP) Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao said, this has been a unique and innovative step in the entire country, where the members of the general public who fail to get their complaints registered at the respective police stations for various reasons, will be offered with an opportunity to register them here. He explained that this initiative was undertaken based on the inputs from the people who said, some of the police stations do not treat the complainants well, when he or she approaches them to file FIR.

The desk has been put up at the entrance to the office of the SP, and B J Bhandary, deputy superintendent of police, will be the nodal officer for the same.

The desk was inaugurated by a person named Janardhan, who had come from Puttur on some official work.

On the occasion, the SP said, that the control room telephone number 100 will soon function as a call centre with four lines. This will also be connected to a vehicle patrolling the city equipped with the Global Positioning System, to be able to effectively deal with the information that comes through the telephone line.

Earlier in the day, a display of the assets and valuables seized by the policemen from the thieves was organized at the Police Maidan. They included gold ornaments, vehicles, weapons etc., recovered from the accused in cases of theft, robbery and dacoity registered in various police stations in the district.

The value of the assets displayed was around Rs 23 lac, with valuables worth Rs 9.95 having already been returned to the complainants, the SP said.

I will accept the comments of Trilok re signature needed to file an FIR under the CrPC and that in this date and age it must be changed so that full name and residential postal address is given ( and can be checked up too).

However for the rank and file members of the public please note there are email addresses given on the karnatakapolice website and the impnos are for Mlore as under Control Room (crmaq@ksp.gov.in) PRO (promaq@ksp.gov.in) and SP sahib (spmaq@ksp.gov.in). If these emails r monitored round the clck by the Duty Officer then he/she can pass on immy to the concerned station for immediate action via the "mobile wireless system". Where there is a Will there is a way.

Here are also telephone nos from the website D.K.DIST. POLICE OFFICERS TELEPHONE NUMBER OFFICERS NAME STD OFFICE CUG MOBILE IGP W/R SRI. GOPAL B.HOSUR IPS 0824 2220501 1311 9480800032 S.P. An emailed complaint cannot be accepted as on today because the law (CrPC) itself mentions that a signed copy of the complaint is to be given by the complainant. To be able to accept an email and then register an FIR on that, the law needs to be changed first. Secondly regarding Azar''s expectation that crime rate will go down, infact when crimes are freely registered, the crime rate will go up initially. More crime will get registered. So if the rate goes up, take it that its working fine.

I fully agree with you Mr. Ferrer. Infact in my comments I wanted to mention about filing FIR thru net (emailing). This will be a great idea if the ''Cell'' plans to introduce it as there may be many who do not wish to come directly at the first instance to file a case for fear of facing the officers, face to face due to the corruption in every field. I am talking about the same thing - vitamine "M" which is asked openly inspite of all placards hanged in every Govt. office.

This means that first you will have to file FIR against the concerned police station where you are not entertained properly. Then lodge your complaint with this newly set up FIR HELP DESK. I hope this will work out in a better way. Any comments?

People inculcate and need to maintain the moral values in the Society in all their dealings. Good behaviour and attitudes are to be inculcated. In view of this, it is HIGHLY ADVISABLE that Police Department, NGOs / Social Organizations,

COMMUNITY LEADERS and RELIGIOUS CENTRES have to organize TRAINING EVENTS on Moral Values / Moral Science from time to time such as SEMINARS, LECTURES, DEBATES, DOCUMENTARY FILMS, POWER POINT SLIDES, QUIZ and practical SOCIAL SERVICE etc. Hope this will help in reducing the crimes and an atmosphere of peace, harmony and brotherhood will prevail among various communities.

I appreciate what has been started by the SP and hope it is successful. But why not an additional registration method in this day and age. an email method where the complainant can send it to the computer system of the Mangalore police station which can then be acknowledged by a return email or an sms (now mobiles r coming with email facilities)- it could be faster and more economical too. Perhaps in the followup there could be photos too available which will help nab the culprits.

Give it a serious thought since entire Karnataka is covered by the Police email and internet network. Dr you will be a trendsetter for the entire state.
