Mangalore: ‘Abbakka Utsav’ Demands Airport to be Named After Warrior Queen

Mangalore, May 31: The ‘Veerarani Abbakka Utsav – 2010’ organized at Tokkottu near here on Sunday May 30, passed a resolution at its valedictory session, to name the airport at Bajpe as ‘Abbakka Airport’, in memory of the legendary queen, who had, with her valiant ways and leadership skills, pushed back the advancing Portuguese marauders with the help of torches.
The Utsav was held under the joint aegis of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Veerarani Abbakka Utsav Samiti since morning to evening on Sunday May 30, at the Late Chandappa Yard at Tokkottu.
Renowned traditional midwife and singer of folk songs, Neelamma Poojarti, inaugurated the celebrations in the morning. Utsav Samiti honorary president and local MLA, U T Khader, inaugurated different sessions held on the occasion. Beary Sahitya Academy president, M B Abdul Rahiman, presided.
Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, Pradip Kumar Kalkura, taluk panchayat president, Ramachandra Kumpala, former president of Tulu Academy, Vaman Nandavar, Fr Muller Hospital administrative officer, Denis D’sa and various other dignitaries were present.
Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, D V Sadanand Gowda presented ‘Veerarani Abbakka Award’ to H Shakuntala Bhat, a Kannada and Tulu writer, and conferred the ‘Veerarani Abbakka Honour’ on international sportsperson, Geeta Bai. In his address, Gowda requested the people not to view all the politicians with skepticism and suspicion. “I will put in efforts to ensure that Rs 25 lac promised by the state government to this Utsav is released. All the concerned should work jointly to get one crore rupees sanctioned for the proposed Abbakka memorial building. The Tulu text book is expected to be released soon,” he said.
U T Khader presided. Moodbidri MLA, Abhayachandra Jain, Kannada Sahitya Parishat former president, Harikrishna Punaroor, Ullal Syed Madani Darga Committee president, U K Monu, and several others participated. Hyder Partippady moved the resolutions, which included the demand for naming Queens Road in Bangalore after Abbakka, and naming one of the trains starting from the city after the queen, among others.
Tulu Academy general secretary, Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli, compered the programme. Dr Sunita delivered the valedictory address.
