New Delhi: SC Tightens Noose Against Unauthorized Prayer Centres

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi (SP)

New Delhi, Sep 15: The Supreme Court (SC) took to task the state governments that have shown disinterestedness to obey its earlier order on unauthorized prayer centres located in public places. Through an order passed long back, the SC had directed the states either to demolish the unauthorized prayer centres standing in public places, or to ensure that they are shifted elsewhere.

On Tuesday September 14, the SC warned that it may be compelled to order for the personal presence of the state chief secretaries in the court, if the states continue to disobey its order on the issue.

In the meantime, the SC bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari gave a time of two weeks for the states to file their replies on the subject. The court expressed its strong resentment at the failure of several states to file either their affidavits or compliance reports relating to the subject, even after several sittings.

The bench had instructed the states and union territories not to allow prayer centres to come up in public places. Temples, mosques, Gurdwaras, churches and such other prayer centres that are built on roads, footpaths and other public places, create traffic and other problems for the people, the SC had observed. It also had issued detailed guidelines to be complied with, and reset the deadlines repeatedly for compliance. The states however, have so far not shown genuine inclination to put to practice the guidelines for obvious reasons.

If the religious functions to have
    a loudspeaker system for special
    occasions, we can tolerate it.
    As Sylvan Pereira has suggested,
the Supreme court has to address
    the noice pollution problem.

While landing in India, I always
have felt like landing at the
middle of a performing opera group.

Early in the morning, the milk and
    paper delivery person with his
cycle bell and lound mouth will
wake us all. Even before that,
    the religious places will start
    running the loudspeaker at the
    highest volume by 5 AM.

This show goes until midnight how many people can have a good night
    sleep?

India may perhaps have the worst
    noice pollution in the world.
And the heavy handed side is
being played by the places of
    worship on a regular basis.
We need to solve this problame in
    an amicable way.

Very good move by SC. All unauthorized prayer centres located in public places have to be removed. But I guess Janardhana Poojary and Siddaramaiah need to be convinced if you want to remove structures belonging to their favorite people.

There must also be a ban imposed on use of Loudspeakers at places of Worship. These are a growing nuisance that shakes up the neighborhood as early as 0500am, disturbing all incl. the sick, elderly and infants. While this is not in practice abroad, in India, its become a growing trend to establish the faulty sense of religousness of the people. Also, if allowed, these speakers should be set to propogate the accoustics only within the place of worship not and not rattle the entire city

Best decision the Supreme Court has taken. Cheers to Supreme Judges.
Next decision should be to ban any Religious Processions on public roads. These things costs Govt. plenty of money providing police for protection and traffic control. It costs the common Citizens their time while attending their duties.

Law of the land must apply on its citizens equally. Supreme court rules supreme and there is no appeal to SC's decission. Irrespective of affiliations all prayer halls built on public property/roads must be brought down. There is no need of consensus and concurrence amongst any community to protect them, how old these may be. God is just and is one and only. Now nobody should scream that SC is acting as agent of Congress/UPA. Supreme court, please go ahead in your demolition drive....All the best.

State govts survive only because of dedicated voters to the elected party. Do you all honestly think the BJP govt of Karnataka will pull down any of the illegal prayer centers on the side of the streets? If they did their voters would ditch them...and so they will not do anything about this. Straight and simple.

Supreme Court or Very Supreme Court - nobody cares..

The Supreme Court is indeed SUPREME and I am glad that a decision in the right direction is taken. Whether it is temple, mosque or a church - no one has any right to put up building without a permit from the right authorities. Often it is seen that an unauthorized building comes and then an attempt is made to regularize the construction. For instance in The City of Mangalore one can see any number structures which have come up - these are adjoining the pavements or roads.

What next? Will these be pulled down.

    Joe Gonsalves.

That is the right decision. When
I travelled in north India, I was
surprised to see the number of
temporary "holy shrines" established by the hundreds on the roadside, with the
    ulterior motive of duping the
innocent people in the name of
religion. Any crook can build a
shrine under a shed and install
a deity of their choice, and the
    blind followers will start putting
money every day at the the foot
of the deity. Somebody can collect
the money every night and make a
    good living.

    Whether it is in N.India
or S. India, shrines were popping up at every corner junction, on the mountain and everywhere
    possible where the people will
throw away their hard earned money
in the name of religion. It turned like a state lottery business.

In my opinion the temple of God is inside every human, since, God created humans individually and will judge them individually and not in groups, therefore the prayer should be between individual and his Creator, and the prayer house should be inside of minds and not in buildings.

What if a place near a prayer hall become a public place later?
We see cross, naga katte etc on many areas does it needs authorization? From whom! Is the authorizing committee existed when these marks/stones where placed!
Better, why don’t stop building new prayer halls completely.

There may be many reasons for building Worship places near the Road or on Footpath. However according to my personal opinion that the Revenue generated through Kanike Dabbe is the main cause.
However shifting these places is only the best solution I feel.
