Mangaluru, Nov 5: “Several people have wrong notions about the New Education Policy (NEP). It is a symbol of discipline and overall education,” said Prof M Jagadish Kumar, chairman of University Grants Commission. He was speaking at the 12th convocation of Nitte deemed to be university.

“The young generation are learning well with discipline, novelty and problem solving skills. They have to face failures and make their lives successful. Go further participating in groups and inculcate leadership qualities. You should develop your inner strengths with humane qualities. Respect teachers, values and honour tradition. Make India reach the peak of progress. We should have unity and dedication among us to achieve them. The intelligent groups among you should get down working in this direction.”

“The country is facing huge challenges. Only 10% of youngsters among those between the ages of 16 to 25 years are able to obtain higher education. Therefore the new degree holders here should be grateful to their parents and the sincere educational institutes such at Nitte institute. Success is certain if you realize your potential and proceed ignoring failures,” he said.

Nitte deemed to be university chancellor N Vinay Hegde who presided over the programme said that Nitte University has succeeded in making the students aware of the hardships of rural life. “Our medical students are studying in more than 30 of our rural centres. We are confident that it will be possible for them to respond positively to the issues faced by ordinary people in the future,” he said.

Professor T S Rao, Government of India, retired senior advisor of Science and Technology mantralaya was conferred honorary doctorate.

Among researchers in various sectors 21 were honoured with doctorate, postgraduate degrees issued to 324 students, degrees to 647 students and fellowship to two scholars. Students of medicine, dentistry, health science, nursing, media and other subjects received degrees in the convocation.

Outstanding 20 students were awarded gold medals, nine charity medals and 11 university medals.

Prof Dr Sathish Kumar Bhandary welcomed. Prof Dr Shantaram Shetty, Vishal Hegde, Prof Dr M S Moodithaya, Dr Harsha Halahalli and Prof Dr Prasad B Shetty were present.
