Bantwal: Serial Thefts Jolt Residents

Bantwal, Jun 29: Thieves entered three houses and a temple at B C Road on the night of Monday June 27, and succeeded in taking away gold ornaments worth a couple of lacs of rupees.

They broke open the rear door of Prabhakar Acharya’s home at Ganapadapadpu in B Mooda village and took away gold ornaments worth Rs 1.54 lac, including a Karimani Acharya’s wife, Shyamala, was wearing.

When the thieves, who went into the home of Rajesh in the same village and tried to force out the Karimani from the neck of Rajesh’s wife, Ashwini, she woke up and raised an alarm. As the lady held on to her ornament, the thieves yanked away a piece of the chain, valued at around Rs 20,000.

The thieves then tried to break open the backdoor of a house owned by Raghavendra in Kulalara Mutt, but fled after the family members woke up. They also broke open the lock of the shrine of Panjurli Daiva in Sri Kumbhodari Temple in Kulalara Mutt, but did not get anything there.

District superintendent of police, Labhu Ram, Puttur assistant superintendent of police, Dr Rohini Katoch, and other police personnel rushed to the spot and took up investigation. Sniffer dogs and finger print experts were summoned.

The citizens of the town and nearby villages have been worried lot in the backdrop of a number of thefts and theft attempts occurring in this area since the last some weeks. It may be recalled that thieves had tried to steal an idol of a temple here some days ago, and the police were able to catch hold of two thieves red-handed when they were stealing clothes from a cloth shop.
