Mangaluru, Jul 28: Corporators in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) meeting slammed officials for not attending the standing committee finance audit meeting.
They were speaking during the council meeting at MCC here on Friday, July 28.
Opposition party leader Naveen D' Souza claimed that there is an allegation that the recruitment of civic workers has not been done transparently. “We doubt that there is an illegality in this. The issue should be handed over to Lokayukta for probe,” he said.
Corporator Sudhir Shetty Kannur stated that locals should be given priority for the work of civic workers.
Veteran Congress leader Shashidhar Hedge said that the forest department, fire service and MESCOM have cooperated in the time of natural disasters. “People are facing problems with the national highway due to unscientific work,” he said.
Sudhir Shetty Kannur said that the officials are not cooperating when trees fall in the rainy season. “The MCC has provided 8 tree-cutting machines to the fire service department. But there is no response from them when required,” he said.
Corporator Abdul Lateef claimed that there are severe problems in Bunder pertaining to drainage. “The officials of the MCC have failed to visit the spot. People are facing drinking water issues as sewage water flows along with drinking water. As many as 21 people are suffering from health issues now drinking polluted water,” he said. Shashidhar Hegde said that mayor should take action by July 29 morning in this regard.
Sudhir Shetty also alleged that several apartments are releasing water directly into the drainage. “The MCC should impose fines against such apartments,” he urged.
MCC commissioner C L Anand informed that there is a provision to impose a fine of Rs 10,000 to Rs 2 lac. And he also said that he will be doing the needful.
Shashidhar Hegde also demanded proper compensation for the houses damaged in the natural disasters.
Hegde also added that there is a scarcity of workers in various departments of the MCC. “The MCC should send a list to the government,” he said.
