Mangaluru, Nov 23: Dangerous goods like iron rods and aluminium strips that protrude beyond the vehicle, which may pose danger to other vehicle drivers and pedestrians, are seen being transported every day. On Wednesday, a similar incident happened at Bangrakulur on NH 66.

Tonnes of iron rods that were loaded on a pickup vehicle slipped and fell on road as the vehicle negotiated the downward slope of the Kulur flyover. Luckily the rods did not hit other vehicles or any pedestrians. Traffic jam was witnessed on the national highway for some time.

Last February, aluminium strips that were carried in a pickup vehicle hit the window shield of the car that was behind it and the driver escaped miraculously at Nanthoor junction.

According to RTO rules, no dangerous goods should be transported in open vehicles. In addition, the goods should not protrude out of the vehicle. However, these rules are not followed and the officials turn a blind eye on such offences.

Hyper extending construction materials, beyond the body of the vehicle, being openly transported in DK is a common sight but absolute no objections whatsoever from the police despite being strictly restricted as per RTO guidelines; after MVAs; this sort of heavy metal items being transported in small vans poses a very high risk to other vehicles and pedestrians; RTO officials are sleeping and only wake up when some innocent loses his life or limbs; worst than many backward state!!
