B'lore: Christian Development Board Grant to be Hiked to Rs 100 Cr : CM

Bangalore: Christian Development Board Grant to be Hiked to Rs 100 Cr Next Year: CM

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 20: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has indicated that the State Government would like to enhance the financial allocation for the Christian Development Board from the Rs 50 crore announced by his predecessor to Rs 100 crore next year.

The Chief Minister gave this indication when a delegation of the office-bearers of Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) led by its Chairman Valerian Fernandes called on him in Bangalore on Tuesday. Former Chairman of FKCA Charles Gomes was also part of the delegation.

Responding to a request made by Fernandes for nominating a suitable person from the community, the Chief Minister said the Government wanted to appoint an eminent and capable person from the Christian minority community and also give suitable representation to different sections in the proposed board, which is likely to be constituted shortly.

However, Gowda said the Government wanted to ensure that the entire funds were properly utilized for the development and welfare of the community so that the financial allocation could be doubled to Rs 100 crore in the budget for 2011-12.

The FKCA delegation comprised of former Chairmen Charles Gomes and Austin Roache and other office-bearers besides presidents of the different associations of Konkani Catholics in Bangalore.

On the demand for withdrawal of all the cases filed against the innoncent Christian youth in Mangalore, Udupi and other places following the series of attacks against Christian churches in 2008, the Chief Minister said the Government has already processed the file and taken necessary steps.

"A formal decision will be taken in the State Cabinet meeting shortly,” he said pointing out that he had already given a promise to the Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras, Mangalore Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza and various other Christian leaders. Responding to the request made by Fernandes about the promise made by former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa during the annual FKCA Day for the year 2008 regarding the allotment of one acre land to FKCA, Gowda asked the FKCA to identify suitable land in Bangalore and take steps to put forth a proposal from the Bangalore Development Authority so that he can process the file immediately.

"We will definitely honour the commitment,” he added.

Fernandes pointed out that the FKCA representing Konkani Catholics had over 25 Associations affiliated to it from different parts of the State and even from several foriegn countries. The former Chief Minister, who was the chief guest at the annual FKCA Day programme held in January 2009 along with the then Home Minister Dr V S Acharya, who is presently the Minister for Higher Education, had announced that the Government would allot the land.

Good Initiative by FKCA. Still the priority should be given for withdrawing the false cases filed against innocent youth during the Church Attacks. All the best...

The Federation should have first pressed for the withdrawal of cases against the Christian youth who have still not been released and are subjected to untold suffering & hardship. Their families are feeling helpless when no positive action is forthcoming inspite of the promises made to release them. This is of top priority. As rightly said, money comes & money goes and does the Federation really need money from the Govt. ? Can't they fend for themselves through other means. Taking money from the Govt. may amount to 'biting more than you can chew' and may result in some kind of compromise at some stage. The need of the hour is communal harmony, peace & brotherhood which the Govt. is duty bound to ensure and not promises of grants being hiked which ultimately may or may not happen.

Any right thinking person must condemn the very idea of 'grants based on religion'. Shamelessly people go and ask for grants based on their religion. It only shows the communal mindedness of so called christian community.
It is tax payers money meant for over all development of whole Karnataka and not Christians alone.
What benefit community will get under this grant. Govt will build Kalyana Mantaps in the name of christian community.Tomorrow you will be asked to produce a proof of your religion if you want to use any service under this scheme. Who is the authority to issue a religion based Identity Card?
Guys don't celebrate the divide and rule designs of wretched politicians.

What CM did was really good, but i want to see in this country is not to allocate money to any particular community, identify people or community who are in need of education/work and bring them up and make them join the main stream. if we do that country will develop, communities will have enough money and also temple/ church/ masjid will get enough money from community itself. People who comment on this site, thing about this, and don’t think in terms of religion.

I am totally against this community based hand-outs. Do Christians really need this money? Have the Christians not progressed in the past with little or no Government help.
Let us reject such handouts and let the money be used for the underprivileged irrespective of religion.
And let the Government treat all people equally regarding to justice and distributing benefits.

Whatever money we get from the government as grant will be well spent on uplifting all the communities as we always do. Christians take pleasure in earning money by ethical means and sharing a part of it with less fortunates. Therefore, we don't see any filthy rich Christians. Further, the money alone may not excite the Christians much.

CM-DVS, a product of Christian college, knows better. The money will not be spend for silver doors for the Church or for diamond studded cover for the Tabernacle.

This 'ever smiling' chief minister had assured to withdraw cases against Catholic Youth of Mangalore within 15 days and till now nothing has happened. FKCA members, be happy that you got the promise of getting a site and the Christian community raising the allocation to 100 crores. I don't trust this 'smiling puppet CM' till he has withdrawn the last case.

Nagesh Nayak Bangalore, with all respect to temples I would say for your 'gutur'that it is not a particular temple/ masjid/ or any individual trust but for entire Christian Community!!!However,He promised in the next Budget as in the last budget it was set aside only half the present promised. But given the political situation who knows DVS remains in helm of Karnataka affairs?

The comment made by Joseph F.G.Bannur/Puttur is most appropriate and I second it.

Here some of the commentators cannot see the BJP state govt donating funds to temples, but when they are doing some good to minority community also they cannot digest it. Now the people come with their comment stating that it is a drama, eyewash, elections are nearing etc etc. If the samething was done by congress or UPA govt the same commentators would have told jai ho jai ho 100 times.

In my opinion for us Christians money is not the matter or important. Money will come and money will go. It is the humans who make money through righteous means and many of them make money on unrighteous means. The most imperative service required from the government and need of the hour is love, peace and harmony to be sustained among communities.
