Mangalore: Misguided Policies - Dasara Holidays Begin After Festival Concludes!

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 22: The holidays school children get during September-October every year have traditionally been known as ‘Dasara (Navaratri) holidays’, even though in some schools they are known as ‘mid-term holidays’.

In the past, the tradition of granting these holidays to coincide with Dasara festival was being followed. Although the name given to the holidays remains intact, strangely, the holidays do not fall during the festivities anymore. This is happening because of the policies being followed by the department of education, which in normal course, is expected to respect the local culture.

This year, the Dasara holidays fall between October 6 and October 27. Dasara festivities are held between September 28 and October 6. If the holiday had been advanced a little bit to coincide with the festivities, the parents could have taken their children with them to their native places to celebrate with their families. Now, they are forced to visit native places after the festivities, in which case, the celebrations part of the annual event is lost.

This is happening perhaps because the officials do not take into account the dates of festivals before drafting the school calendar before the beginning of the academic year. The Kerala government makes it a point to grant ten days holiday during Onam festival.

During last year, the holidays were adjusted to enable people of the twin-districts to take part in the grand Dasara celebrations at Kudroli temple in the city, after protests and discussions were held. The problem is not specific to the coastal districts alone, as Dasara is celebrated all over the state, and Dasara festival in Mysore attracts tourists from all over the globe.

The officials do not seem to have learnt their lessons. Advancement of holidays at this stage entails postponement of some mid-term examinations after the holidays, which the children detest to face as they will still be in festive mood. The officials could have surely avoided this situation if they had put in some thought before deciding on holiday dates, one feels.

In Bangalore many of the Private Catholic school managements give due importance to Dasara as well as Christmas and the school remains closed for Dasara from the start of the festivities till the last day of Dasara and even a day or two extra because of weekends.Eever since my children started schooling I know for sure this practice is being followed by these schools.

Mr.Kaushik,Christmas season lasts for three months, from Oct to mid Jan and is celebrated all over the world. We have only one festival where as you have several festivals for each if you take one day it will add up to 15 days. I am not against you getting 15 days, but then with 150 days holidays your child will not have time to study.I was born and brought up in Mangalore and enjoy all the festivals.

Authorities [Especially BJP & its allies] as well some ill minded Indians always blame for western culture and so on. How the children can learn the culture when they are forbidden from such events? Some common sense is required for the education minister and the department as well as CM and its gang.

Best thing is not to have any holidays except 1 day for Christmas and 1 day Dasara.school holidays given to kids to relax their mind after few months of hard work put in school which is required. Many countries mix them with festivals but in Indian states..every party which is in power makes their own rules.

I think one day holiday for Dasara is enough. Even in Mysore the Dasara procession is on the 10th day only. for Christmas we need at least 15 days as we have to do chirstmas shopping and other decorations.Dasara is big festival in Bengal in D.K. we have several festivals like Ugadi for which we get one day holiday.

Kishore your suggestion is silly. During our time we used to have around 20 days of holidays during Dasara and 9 days ( from 24th Dec to 1st january) for Christmas and New year, in all christian institutions. In other shools they used to have almost a month of holidays Dasara holidays and only 1 day holiday for christmas.

The best way is to continue that way or retain the first option of 20 days during Dasara and 10 days during christmas and new year. Most importantly the dates of Dasara festival should be studied in advance so that mid term exams and the 20 days holidays are adjusted according to the dates of the Dasara festival.

Dear Kishore. Why do you unnecessarily worry about Christmas time and holidays. Dasara has no connection for December my dear. Do not poke your perfumed talc nose a fickle mind my friend. This will lead to a religion ruin. Cool !!

Reason for the misguide is before there was no 10-15 days Christmas Holidays. Only Mid Term Holiday ( Darara Holiday) that is full October Month. Because of Christmas Holiday , days of Dasara Holiday reduced. 15 days Christmas holiday is really ridiculous. Govt should strick to the Dasara Holiday of one month & one day Holiday for Christmas.
