Mangalore, Sep 23:
St Aloysius College (Autonomous) on Friday September 23 inaugurated 'Glory of Womanhood' year-long celebrations marking the silver jubilee of the presence of lady staff and students in the college. The programme was held at Eric Mathias Hall in the college campus.

Mangalore Vishwas Trust director Dr Olinda Pereira, the chief guest on the occasion, said that celebrating the silver jubilee of the presence of women in the campus indeed was a significant event as it conveys the message that boys and girls are equal and share equally prominent roles in the society.

"There is no room for domination of one by the other," Dr Pereira said, calling upon the college administration and students to lead the way in building a strong society by imbibing the value of mutual respect between the two sexes.

St Aloysius Institutions rector Fr Joseph Rodrigues presiding over the programme said that imparting education for both sexes under one roof is an opportunity to bring the atmophere of home into the class room. He stated that research indicated co-education system improved confidence and respect among the sexes, enabling both girls and boys to live a comfortable life. He added that the co-education system hardly has any disadvantage.

Former bureaucrat of the Indian Revenue Service and writer Giselle Mehta said that co-education was a step forward to achieve women empowerment, as earlier the intellectual capacity of women was suppressed in a male-dominated society. Co-education also inculcates a level of maturity among students, she pointed out.

Former principal and rector of the Aloysius Institutions Dr Leo D'Souza, principal Fr Swebert D'Silva, registrar (evaluations) Dr A M Narahari, campus minister Fr Francis D'Almeida, vice-principal Ronald Pinto, vice-principal Dr Lourdusamy, co-ordinator of the organising commitee Veronica Judy Pinto among others were present.

To elaborate on what has been quoted, it might interest readers that the intellectual suppression I spoke about was a past phenomenon my speech then proceeded to highlight the milestones in women's education. A point I made was that Calcutta University in 1878 had already started co-education, when even the newly started colleges of Girton and Newnham in Oxford and Cambridge at the time merely allowed women to study but did not award degrees till a few decades later.

I also found it significant to point out thatSt Aloysius in 1986 was progressive being only two decades behind the centuries' old Harvard in having women students on campus. I was happy to note that given the opportunity, girl students are excelling academically, and this propels them forward with confidence for future achievement. Equally, I hoped both male and female students would enjoy a balanced self-discovery- to follow their real aptitudes rather than succumb to social pressures.

When I was studying in SAC no girls sdmitted to the college but now the time changed and It is always to have a co-education. This was good step that women were given admission to the college.
25 years passed and good progress.

Congratulations Rector, Principal, Adminsstrator and the Staff of SAC.

    Long live SAC.

Indeed the brainwave to introduce co-education at St. Aloysius College was a step in the right direction. I am an aloysian and I take keen interest with activities connected with my Alma Mater. There are positive advantages in the system of having young men and ladies at any Institute. During my conversation with some of Jesuit Fathers I even learned that our young men behave like gentlemen in the presence of lady students.

In lives ahead of our present generation they have to interact with ladies at various levels and with a firm grounding at SAC both ladies and young men will be getting the necessary views to face lives.

It see good to see my dear friends Father Leo, Father Jossy, Father Swebert, Father Walter and Father Francis on the dais.

My good wishes are and will always be with St. Aloysius. I join scores of people in thanking and praising the pioneer Father Leo D'Souza during whose tenure the idea of co-education was conceived and uted.

To have Ms. Olinda Pereira as the Chief Guest was the right choice. Indeed we have Giselle there too. She has not minced words while stating that the intellectual capacity of women was suppressed in a male dominated society. I tend to think that this does not hold good any more as more and more women have come into limelight including Giselle herself.
