Udupi: Villagers Rise Against UPCL Power Plant, Threaten Forceful Shutdown

Udupi, Sep 29: Members of Nandikur Jana Jagruti Samiti and Raita Sangh cautioned Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) over the environmental consequences posed by its power plant at Nandikur, by staging a protest in front of the main gate of UPCL at Mudarangady-Bellibattu, here on Thursday September 29.

The people of Yellur, Mudarangady, Santoor, Padubidri, Hejamady, Padebettu and Yermal joined the protest.

The protesters hurled slogans against UPCL and demanded deputy commissioner Dr Reju to come to the location and listen to their grievances.

DC Dr Reju and SP Ravikumar Y S arrived at the spot to calm down the situation. The local farmers alleged that the saline water drawn from Arabian Sea for the cooling towers is discharged in their neighbourhood. consequently polluting the water bodies and causing health hazards to people and livestock and marine life.  The smoke from chimneys is polluting the air, and flying ash is contaminating wells and irrigation ponds, they complained.

The district administration has not taken any action despite the instructions of the then chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. The plant was issued license to generate electricity till June 2011, but the plant is running even now. The protesters urged Dr Reju to resolve the issue by October 10, failing which they would shut the main gate.

Dr Reju in response to the grievances of the protesters said that he was aware of the issues raised by them. The state administration has issued instructions to form an expert committee that will visit the villages to gather first hand information, he said, and assured them of making an honest attempt in resolving their problems. On the basis of these assurances, the protest was called off.

Nandikur Jana Jagruti Samiti and Raita Sangh representatives Prakash Shetty Padebettu, Nagesh Bhat, Jayant Bhat, Raghuram Shetty, Timmappa Kulal, Sunilraj Shetty, Shivaprasad Shetty, Sudhakar Shetty Hejamady, Poovappa Poojary, Nitin Shetty, Harish Shetty Padebettu, Aitappa Poojary, Sumitra S Acharya, Ravindra Prabhu, Prashant Shetty Inna, Navin Shetty, Jaya S Shetty, Bhoja Anchan, Vishu Kumar Shetty and others were present.

Circle inspector Cheluvaraj, intelligence personnel Ramesh Padubidri sub-inspector Mahadev Shetty, Shirva sub-inspector K R Nayak, Kaup sub-inspector Girish provided security during the protest.

    Indian, India

A Doctor's duty is not to construct houses but to treat patients. Similarly, Ram Sene is an Hindu organisation and not created for taking up environmental issues.

Mr. Indian, you please start an organisation which can take up all types of issues similar to an alrounder in Cricket.

You are calling someone as MADMAN.

But, every one in this world is MAD to some extent.

    Avarige HUCHCHU NIMAGE SVALPA HECHCHU.

Where is our MADMAN NAGESHA NAYAK. one more opportunity to blame the opposition.
wish you and your Rama Sene takes up these issues of corruption ex: Reddy brother, 2g scam etc with equal importance instead of pointing fingers. Its more important to put our house in order irrespective of which political party is involved. Treat everyone equally and the guilty need to be punished.

All he goes is Blah Blah Blah about congress.... do something worthwhile

This power co. is playing with the lives of people by generating power without adhering to the basics of pollution control. Indeed people in the vicinity have been suffering for long with intermittent protests which have been just shrugged off by the concerned authorities. This is a mini Bhopal in the making. A big movement should be started by the localities till justice is made!!

Mr Sangram is sitting in London and passing useless comments. Please come down to Nandikur and see for yourself and feel the pain. It is always easy to comment without knowing the problems, so please think and understand any situation before passing comments

Money should be looted from BJP-Reddy brothers political nexus and given to the poor and suffering living close to the UPCL plant. The BJP is responsible for all our problems in our state.

"Udupi: Villagers Rise Against UPCL Power Plant, Threaten Forceful Shutdown" RECENTLY OUR STATE ELECTRICITY MINISTER SAID THAT OUR STATE HAS TO BRACE FOR POWERCUT DUE TO SHORTAGE OF COAL IN OUR STATE. I BELEIVE THAT IF GOVT. WOULD HAVE BEEN CONVERTED THE LOOT AMOUNT AND GOLD FROM THUG-REDDY THEN WE WOULD HAVE BEEN BOUGHT COAL FROM OTHER STATE. THE SECOND THING IS THAT NOW A DAYS HI-FI BULLDINGS ARE COMING-UP, SHOPPING MALLS-RESIDENTIAL PALACES. ALL ARE EQUIPPED WITH HI-FI LIFTS & ACS. SO GENERAL PEOPLE WANTS TO LIVE IN LUXURY LIFE WITH LIMITED NATURAL RESOURCES. COMMON-GUYS WAKE-UP, SAVE ENERGY FOR TOMORROW'S GENERATION. ATLEAST WE DON'T HAVE ANY NATURAL RESOURCES IN OUR STATE ATLEAST, ALL ARE LOOTED BY BJP-REDDY'S ETC. SO NO NEED TO RISE AGAINST UPCL PLANT, WE DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER OPTION, ALL NEED ELECTRICITY, AND NOT KEROCINE CHIMNEYS IN NIGHT, ALL NEED ACS, AND NOT TABLE / CEILING FANS, CHANGE THE MINDSET AND LIVE IN A SIMPLE LIFE, DON'T SHOW HI-FI, BE SIMPLE WITH KIND HEART.

If the same amount of money was invested in Green Power Plants like Wind & Solar- today all these pollution could have been avoided.
But our Politicians are only concerned with how much cut they get in each & every project. They are least bothered about people's welfare or pollution taking away their livelihoood or Health.
They will relocate to western countries where these power plants are banned & would comment like Sangram-London would do. I request him to reside near the plant vicinity & then continue commenting like he did.
Now too Its not late- revert to LPG or CNG to save the environment. All the acquired land which is being is used to dump the fly-ash could be used to utilise the energy by establishing Industrial Economic Zone.

Sangram, london we need Power but not at the cost of Health and Logevity of our Villagers .The flying ash contains Mercury which is Toxic to both Liver and Kidneys .It is better if UPCL Clearly make arrangements to contain these Toxic effluents and then proceed

All they have to do is change the technology, from coal base to LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) that can easily be piped in from MRPL nearby.

It is a shame to see so many police personnel, wgho are procteting the interests of the culprits. Change technology or close Nandicoor for good. We can live without electricty and are used to numerous outages.
