Mangalore, Oct 1: World Elders’ Day was celebrated at Vishwas Trust, an organization that has been involved with the welfare and well-being of senior citizens, in the city on Friday September 30 to mark the actual day which is on October 1.

Judith Mascarenhas, deputy mayor, Mangalore City Corporation and a social worker, was the chief guest. She said that elders are the new power behind boosting development as they are well experienced in life.

Mascarenhas asserted that elders seldom need sympathy but are starved for affection and love from people in the family and the society. She also said that there is need for good response by elders to the happenings in society that keeps them active and their service to the society will be the greatest contribution.

The programme was followed by singing, and skits by members of the Trust.

Along with the inmates of the Trust, about 50 senior citizens were present at the programme. Everybody present extended best wishes to all the elderly people on the occasion of the ‘World Elders’ Day’. Sr Olida Pereira of Roshni Nilaya was amongst those present at this meaningful programme.
