Syndal, Oct 12: Konkani, a unique language with a rich history of over 2,000 years, spoken in a small coastal region of India, has now spread its fragrance around the globe, thanks to the illustrious and enterprising members of the community who are living worldwide. From the early pioneers who migrated from Mangaluru to Australia, the Konkani-speaking community has grown immensely. As the community assimilates into the local culture, it remains equally important to focus attention on the unique bond they all share—Konkani.

Karaval Konkans Australia Inc., a newly incorporated association, has taken a bold step to invigorate and preserve the uniqueness of Konkani traditions, culture, and language within the ever-growing Konkani-speaking community as a gift to future generations. A dream envisioned by one, a thought shared by many, and a vision to become a movement across Australia united by language and heritage, this initiative symbolizes the dedication of the community. It takes a committed team to turn this dream into reality and bring it to fruition.

The office bearers for the inaugural committee of Karaval Konkans Australia are as follows:

Founder chairman: Wilson Kalakar - The visionary behind the initiative to connect Konkani communities in Australia, Wilson has previously initiated the first Konkani association in Israel. He has been an executive committee member of Maand Sobhaan since its inception and continues to play an active role. His passion for drama and theatre in India led to his successful efforts in screening Osmitay across major cities in Australia last year.

President: Jane D'Souza - Raised in a Konkani-speaking family, Jane's strong cultural ties drive her passion for preserving and promoting Konkani heritage. A dynamic leader, who has successfully led other associations, she excels at bringing people together and inspiring action. Under her leadership, the association is confident of flourishing and continuing to foster Konkani culture for future generations.

Vice president: Roshan Valder - With a long association with the Konkani community in Australia and an undying love for Konkani culture and heritage, Roshan is a strong pillar of the association. His desire to give back to the community and commitment to safeguarding Konkani culture in multicultural Australia make him an ideal fit for this role.

Secretary: Caroline D'Souza - An enterprising individual with strong Konkani roots, Caroline’s organizational skills will help keep the association focused on achieving its initiatives. Her meticulous nature ensures that the association's objectives are met with precision.

Treasurer: Ashley D'Silva - An ardent lover of Konkani language, culture, and traditions, Ashley has been actively involved in music, drama, and arts for many years, in addition to leading volunteer organizations before moving to Australia.

Sports secretary: Manoj D'Silva - Manoj believes that Konkani culture is a treasure trove of rich traditions and wisdom. His commitment to keeping Konkani culture alive and thriving in Australia drives his involvement in Karaval Konkans Australia.

Media secretary: Darel Lasrado - Enthusiastic and passionate about maintaining a connection to his Konkani roots, Darel volunteers his time and experience to help forge a path for future generations of Konkani lovers.

Grants coordinator: Wilson D'Souza - A finance professional with extensive volunteer experience in India and Australia, Wilson brings valuable insights to the committee, enhancing its initiatives with his practical knowledge and diverse perspective.

Events & Marketing coordinator: Joe Sequeira - A passionate supporter of Konkani culture, Joe aims to incorporate this into the many events held by Karaval Konkans. He is determined to showcase the talents of the Konkani community across Australia, encouraging the younger generation to carry forward the culture and traditions.

Music and Performing Arts coordinator: Sandria Rodrigues - Born and raised along the Konkan coast, Sandy believes in integrating Konkani culture into homes far from Mangaluru. She is excited to contribute to Karaval Konkans Australia by keeping the Konkan flag flying high.

Youth Engagement representative: Ria Valder - Growing up in Australia, Ria has a strong sense of duty to promote and preserve Konkani heritage and language. She will engage young members of the community, fostering pride and belonging in the younger generation and ensuring the continuity of Konkani traditions.

Young Talents coordinator: Bonita D'Silva - With a talent for nurturing children’s skills, Bonita is the perfect person to help young members of the community thrive in Konkani culture. Her previous work with groups like the Soulstirrers Kuwait Kids Band makes her an invaluable asset for guiding young talents.

Spiritual director: Fr Jacob Alvares - Currently the assistant parish priest at St Christopher’s Parish, Syndal, Fr Jacob brings vast experience from his involvement with the Konkani-speaking community. His guidance will ensure that faith and heritage remain the foundation of the association.

The association is committed to making a difference through various activities, including music, theatre, art, and community events that showcase the richness of Konkani to the world. A unique aspect of this association is that there are no joining fees; instead, it will rely on the support and participation of the community across its initiatives.
