Udupi, Jan 11: In a proactive move to enhance road safety, the Udupi District Police, Police sub-division, and Lions Club Udupi have launched Road Safety Week 2025. The initiative was officially inaugurated by Dr K Arun Kumar, superintendent of police of Udupi district.
The district police kicked off the awareness campaign with a unique approach, distributing tea and sweets to motorists passing through the area to ensure the message of road safety reached a wider audience.
During his inaugural address, Dr. K. Arun Kumar said, “Be safe while travelling on the roads as over a thousand cases of traffic violations have already been registered in the district within the past year, with more than 250 of these resulting in fatalities. To reduce the number of accidents, the police department is conducting this safety week. I have already brought attention to areas with traffic issues, and solutions have been implemented at various black spots in the district. I urge motorists to wear helmets and seat belts as a mandatory safety measure while travelling.”
Lions Club Udupi President, Louis Lobo, also spoke at the event, emphasizing that “safety on the roads is a shared responsibility” and urged all individuals—including drivers, pedestrians, and authorities—to play their part in creating safer roads. He stressed that it’s not only about enforcing rules but also about fostering a culture of awareness and discipline. Lobo further added that “Police officers must continue to be vigilant and ensure that motorists follow the traffic laws. Additionally, the administration should focus on improving the quality of roads, as this plays a significant role in preventing accidents.”
The ongoing Road Safety Week will see continued efforts from the police and community organizations to spread awareness and encourage citizens to adopt safer practices while traveling. Authorities are hopeful that these initiatives will lead to a significant reduction in road accidents in the Udupi district and help foster a culture of safety among motorists.
The event was also attended by District additional superintendent of police Siddalingappa, Rotary 3182 District president Jai Vittal, and several other police officials and community members, all supporting efforts to raise awareness about road safety.
