New Delhi, Jan 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commended the Election Commission (EC) for its use of technology to bolster the democratic process and ensure fair elections, ahead of the foundation day of the poll body on January 25, observed as National Voters' Day.

In his monthly Mann Ki Baat broadcast, Modi highlighted the EC's continuous modernization of the election process and its commitment to upholding transparency and fairness, despite ongoing opposition criticisms alleging bias in favor of the ruling BJP.

Modi emphasized the significant role technology has played in empowering voters and urged citizens to actively participate in the electoral process to strengthen democracy. His comments were seen as an implicit endorsement of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which have faced skepticism from opposition parties regarding their reliability.

The Prime Minister also reflected on India's democratic journey, recalling that doubts were cast on the country's democratic viability after independence. However, he proudly stated, "India is the mother of democracy," affirming the nation's success in overcoming challenges.

As part of the broadcast, Modi played audio clips from India's Constituent Assembly members, including Rajendra Prasad, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, highlighting their contributions to the country's democratic values.

The Prime Minister also touched upon the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, emphasizing the unity of people from diverse castes and regions, noting that there is no discrimination at the sacred gathering.

This month's Mann Ki Baat aired on the third Sunday, deviating from the usual last Sunday of the month due to Republic Day celebrations next week.
