Ghaziabad, May 25: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 58-year-old sub-inspector posted in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad lost his life after the roof of a police station collapsed due to intense rain and gusty winds that lashed several parts of northern India.
The deceased officer, Virendra Kumar Mishra, was attached to the office of the Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) in Ankur Vihar. Sources said the tragic mishap occurred in the early hours of Sunday when he was asleep inside the police office. The torrential downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms, led to the collapse of the roof, burying him under the debris.

It was only when fellow officers reported to duty in the morning that the tragedy came to light. Mishra’s body was retrieved from the rubble and rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
The devastating weather conditions affected several northern states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. The national capital, Delhi, too witnessed heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging, uprooting of trees, and disruption of air traffic.
According to a report issued by the Integrated Disaster Control Centre under the Relief Commissioner’s Office in Lucknow, at least 49 people across Uttar Pradesh lost their lives between 8 pm on May 21 and 4 pm on May 22 due to rain-related incidents. Most fatalities were attributed to falling trees, wall and roof collapses, and lightning strikes.
The administration has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that relief efforts are underway in the affected areas.
