Udupi, May 29: Effective precautionary measures must be taken to deal with heavy rainfall and floods, and swift response is essential to ensure the safety of people and animals, said women and child development minister and Udupi district in-charge minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar.
The minister held a video conference with officials from Udupi district to review rain-related damage. She pointed out that the region has received significantly more pre-monsoon rain this year than expected. While the average rainfall expected from January until now was 177.4 mm, the district has received 801.7 mm — nearly three times the usual amount.

She directed officials to be fully prepared for the upcoming three-month monsoon season and to keep all necessary equipment and systems ready to deal with potential floods and other rain-related issues.
The minister instructed that control rooms at both the district and taluk levels must function round-the-clock, and any complaints regarding rain damage must be addressed immediately. Relief must be provided without delay to those affected by heavy rainfall.
She also stressed the importance of regularly monitoring water levels and inflow at the Varahi reservoir. If there is any potential risk to the public, they must be alerted in advance to prevent any mishaps.

The minister also warned of the risks posed to tourists visiting beaches, streams, ponds, and waterfalls in the district. Warning boards should be installed at such locations, and if possible, staff should be deployed to ensure public safety.
Referring to incidents in neighbouring Dakshina Kannada district, the minister said there has been a rise in criminal cases and some minor incidents reported near the border. She directed that suitable measures must be taken to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
District in-charge secretary Satyavati G urged officials and staff to remain at central locations and stay proactive in disaster management. They must ensure their mobile phones are active 24/7 to respond promptly to public grievances.
