Mangaluru: Monsoon triggers fears of infectious diseases amid rising cases of fever, cold, and cough

Mangaluru, May 29: As the monsoon sets in Mangaluru city and across Dakshina Kannada district, concerns over a possible outbreak of infectious diseases have emerged. With the shifting weather patterns bringing intermittent rain, sunshine, and cloudy skies, health issues—especially among children—are on the rise.

Doctors report a growing number of cases involving viral fever, cold, and cough, particularly in children. As schools reopen, the prevalence of these symptoms has become a pressing concern. Medical professionals advise that if children display signs of fever or infectious illness, they should be kept at home to prevent transmission to others.

Amid this, there is also a growing threat of mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue and malaria. Currently, the district has recorded 37 cases of dengue and 27 cases of malaria this year.

Officials warn that the intermittent rainfall creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding, which could lead to a further spike in cases. In response, the health department will launch a house-to-house awareness and inspection drive this week.

Not all fever is Covid-19

With the onset of monsoon, there are rising concerns about Covid-19. However, health experts clarify that not all instances of fever and cold during this season are due to Covid-19. Nevertheless, they advise that anyone experiencing such symptoms should consult a doctor instead of self-medicating or purchasing over-the-counter drugs without prescription.

Common monsoon ailments

Monsoon-related illnesses typically include cold, cough, sore throat, respiratory discomfort, nasal congestion, chest tightness, skin dryness, allergies, asthma, and digestive issues. Children are especially vulnerable to viral infections, cold, and pneumonia.

Preventive measures recommended:

– Wash hands and feet thoroughly
– Wear warm and dry clothing
– Drink boiled and cooled water
– Consume foods that boost immunity
– Avoid self-medication; consult a physician if symptoms appear

Call for public cooperation in disease control

"With sporadic rainfall and conditions ideal for mosquito breeding, dengue cases may rise in the coming days. The public must remain vigilant and take preventive measures. Cooperation with the health department is essential in controlling the spread of dengue and other infectious diseases," stated Dr Jecintha D’Souza, District Vector-Borne Disease Control Officer, Dakshina Kannada.
