Pratima Coutinho leads protest, demands action in youth assault case

Daijiworld Media Network – Margao

Margao, Aug 5: Social activist Pratima Coutinho, along with aggrieved residents of Navelim, staged a protest outside the Margao police station on Monday, demanding swift justice for a youth who was allegedly assaulted by a group of anti-social elements last week.

Coutinho alleged that a group of men from Margao, including a known repeat offender, brutally attacked the youth. “Even after he fled to his house in Sinquetim-Navelim, the attackers followed him and vandalised a vehicle parked outside,” she claimed.

Criticising the Margao police for failing to register an FIR, the activist accused the authorities of functioning under political pressure. “Despite the severity of the incident, no FIR has been filed. Is the Margao police being silenced by political influence?” she asked.

“The youth was assaulted, and his car was damaged. The police must act now.”

In response, Margao Police Inspector Suraj Samant said some individuals had been detained for disturbing the peace. “The complainant did not mention the car damage initially. We are reviewing CCTV footage and will take appropriate action,” he said.

Locals have urged the police to act without delay and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.
