Panaji Sep 3: As flu cases rise across Goa with the monsoon in full swing, health authorities are urging residents to stay alert but not alarmed. According to Dr. Utkarsh Betodkar, the State Epidemiologist, the spike in influenza infections is a typical seasonal trend and is expected to decline as the rains ease in September.
"These kinds of viral infections are common during the peak monsoon months — June, July, and August — when the weather conditions are ideal for viruses to spread," Dr. Betodkar explained. "But by September, we usually see a natural drop in such cases."
Drawing parallels with past outbreaks such as the H1N1 flu in 2009 and Covid-19 in 2020, Dr. Betodkar emphasized that most seasonal flus are driven by viruses that flourish in wet, humid conditions.
While downplaying fears of a serious outbreak, he nonetheless urged the public to seek medical attention for persistent or severe flu symptoms. “Neglecting prolonged cold or flu symptoms can lead to complications, including pneumonia,” he warned, especially for individuals with pre-existing health issues.
To minimize the risk of infection, Dr. Betodkar advised continuing simple preventive habits adopted during the Covid-19 era — such as regular hand-washing and wearing masks in crowded or polluted areas.
“These small steps go a long way in preventing transmission,” he said, reiterating that although the current flu wave is manageable, maintaining personal hygiene and vigilance remains essential.
