Asia Cup row may shadow India-Pakistan Women’s World Cup clash says Saba Karim

Colombo, Oct 3: Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim has said that the recent Asia Cup controversy could have a cascading effect on the ICC Women’s World Cup clash between India and Pakistan, but maintained that Harmanpreet Kaur’s side would not be distracted by “outside noise” given the wide gulf between the two teams.

During the Asia Cup in the UAE, India had refused to shake hands with Pakistan, even after winning the title, and declined to accept the trophy from ACC president and Pakistan’s federal interior minister Mohsin Naqvi. Following the precedent set by the men’s team, the Indian women are also expected to avoid handshakes in Colombo on Sunday.

“Yes, there will be pressure because of the controversy, but I’m sure the Indian team management would have prepared for such situations. The best solution is to block out the noise and focus on the game,” Karim said during a JioStar programme.

He added that while tensions may linger, the BCCI has made its stance clear. “The Indian women’s team will behave the same way as the men’s team did. No handshakes with Pakistan cricketers. Once that is out of the way, the focus will be on the match,” he noted.

On the contest itself, Karim said the Indian women’s team remains far ahead. “There is a huge gulf in terms of quality, skill set, and resources. India has moved well past Pakistan, though you can’t take any side lightly. Sidra Amin and captain Fatima Sana are key players to watch from their team,” he observed.

Looking at India’s wider campaign, Karim cautioned about three challenges: sustaining form in a long tournament, maintaining fitness across multiple venues, and handling the pressure of being tipped as favourites. “Players like Smriti Mandhana must sustain their form throughout, recovery and fitness will be crucial, and expectations will add pressure. These will decide India’s journey in the World Cup,” he said.
