Mumbai, Oct 16: Veteran actor Adil Hussain has expressed regret over his supporting role in the 2019 hit ‘Kabir Singh’, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. The film, a remake of the Tamil-Telugu hit ‘Arjun Reddy’, was a commercial success but drew criticism for its portrayal of toxic masculinity and misogyny.

Speaking to Mid-Day, Hussain revealed he hadn’t read the full script or watched the original before signing on. “I was traveling extensively with Mukti Bhawan then and didn’t have the time to go through the full script or watch the original Telugu version,” he said. Initially, he had even tried to decline the offer, asking his manager to quote five times his usual fee. He eventually accepted due to one scene he found brilliantly written.

However, after the film’s release, Hussain said his perspective changed. “When I saw the film, I thought, ‘What have I done?’” he admitted, calling the film misogynistic. He added that as an artist, it was his responsibility to refuse the role, and several female friends had expressed disappointment over his participation.

About the Film: Kabir Singh, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga in his Bollywood debut, follows the story of a brilliant surgeon who spirals into self-destructive behavior after his girlfriend is forced into an arranged marriage. Despite the controversy, the film remains a notable box-office success.
