Trossard strike sends Arsenal three points clear at top of Premier League

London, Oct 19: Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, with Leandro Trossard’s second-half strike proving decisive.

The Belgian forward netted his first league goal of the season to hand Mikel Arteta’s side their fifth straight victory in all competitions, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches. The win also restored Arsenal to first place after Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Everton had briefly lifted them to the summit earlier in the day.

The Gunners, chasing their first Premier League title since 2004, have now won six of their opening eight league games this season.

Fulham began brightly, testing Arsenal’s defence early on. Harry Wilson’s clever pass found Raul Jimenez, whose strike was kept out by goalkeeper David Raya. Moments later, Wilson’s curling effort narrowly missed the far post after capitalising on a misplaced pass by Gabriel Magalhaes.

Riccardo Calafiori thought he had put Arsenal ahead with a superb strike, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Fulham kept pressing as Wilson forced another save from Raya before Josh King’s cross was tipped over the bar.

At the other end, Bukayo Saka set up Viktor Gyokeres, but the forward’s goal drought extended to seven games as Fulham keeper Bernd Leno denied him with a fine stop.

After several missed chances, Arsenal finally broke through in the 58th minute. From a Saka corner, Gabriel flicked the ball across goal and Trossard tapped in from close range to make it 1-0.

It was Arsenal’s 37th goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 season — underlining their growing set-piece strength.

With Rolling Stones frontman and lifelong Arsenal fan Mick Jagger watching from the stands, the Gunners saw out the game efficiently despite Fulham’s late pressure.

Saka almost doubled the lead with a mazy run that forced another sharp save from Leno, while a VAR review overturned a potential Arsenal penalty after replays showed Kevin’s tackle on Saka made contact with the ball.

Gyokeres’s struggles in front of goal continued as he missed two late chances, but Arsenal had already done enough to secure a crucial win that strengthens their title ambitions heading into the next round of fixtures.
