Mapusa, Oct 31: Five inmates of the Central Jail, Colvale, have been booked for allegedly assaulting an undertrial prisoner inside the jail premises on October 24, police said.

The incident took place around 8:40 am in the convict block of the jail when the accused inmates — Vally D’Costa, Amar Kalal, Salik Bepari, Mandrar Prabhu, and Vinod Sharma — all lodged in the NDPS block, allegedly formed an unlawful assembly and attacked Mohammed Rehan Sharif, an undertrial prisoner from Block No. III.

Police said the group assaulted Sharif with slaps, fist blows, and a mop stick, causing injuries to his face, head, and other parts of the body.

Based on Sharif’s complaint filed on October 30, Anjuna Police registered a case under Sections 115(2), 189(1), and 191(2) read with Section 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

It may be recalled that an undertrial prisoner had been brutally attacked by fellow inmates inside Colvale Jail last week, sustaining serious injuries to his face and body. He was immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Further investigation into the incident is being conducted by PSI Swanand Prabhu of the Anjuna Police Station.
