Kolkata, Dec 8: Veteran Bengali actor Kalyan Chatterjee, known for his natural and relatable portrayals of the everyday Bengali man, passed away late Sunday night at the age of 81. He breathed his last at MR Bangur Super Speciality Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for typhoid and age-related ailments, PTI reported.
Kalyan Chatterjee, who made his debut with the 1968 film Apanjan, had an illustrious career spanning over five decades, featuring in more than 400 films. He became a beloved face in Bengali cinema through memorable performances in Dhanyee Meye, Dui Prithibi, Sabuj Dwiper Raja, Baishe Srabon and several others. His collaboration with legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray in Pratidwandi (1970) remains one of the notable highlights of his career.

While widely recognised in Bengali cinema, Kalyan also made a mark in Hindi films. His role in Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller Kahaani introduced him to audiences across India. He was frequently cast by renowned directors like Tapan Sinha and Arabinda Mukhopadhyay.
The West Bengal Motion Picture Artists Forum, in a statement, remembered him as “one of our most valued members” and expressed deep sorrow at his demise. Tributes have been pouring in from colleagues, co-stars and fans who admired his effortless acting style and emotional depth.
Some of his other popular works include Paar, Sagina, The Waiting City, Chittagong, Sona Dadu, Tansener Tanpura (web series), Hatey Roilo Pistol, Notun Diner Alo, Tista Parer Kainya, Sparshaa, Phire Phire Chai, The Waltz, Private Practice, Postmaster, Kono Ek Robibar and Ektu Bhalobasar Janno.
