Delhi HC refuses to stay release of Web Series ‘UP 77’ based on Vikas Dubey

New Delhi, Dec 24: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to stay the release of the web series UP 77, reportedly inspired by the life of slain gangster Vikas Dubey.

Justice Sachin Datta, while hearing a plea filed by Dubey’s wife, Richa, seeking to block the release, stated that the court was not inclined to interfere at this stage. The series is set to premiere on the Waves OTT platform on Thursday.

The court recorded the producers’ statement asserting that UP 77 is a work of fiction and has no connection to Dubey’s actual life. The producers were also directed to make a public statement clarifying this fact.

In her plea, Richa Dubey had argued that the release of the web series would cause her trauma and harassment. The court has scheduled further hearings on the matter for January 7, 2026.

Vikas Dubey, a key accused in the killing of eight police personnel in Kanpur in 2020, was shot dead by Uttar Pradesh Police during an encounter. Dubey was being transported from Ujjain to Kanpur after surrendering when he allegedly attempted to escape following an accident involving the police vehicle.
