IMD predicts scorching summer in Karnataka due to global warming, La Niña & low humidity

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that summer temperatures across Karnataka this year are expected to exceed normal levels, raising concerns about heat intensity and public health.

Several districts, including Kalaburagi, Haveri, Bagalkote, Shivamogga, and Uttara Kannada, have already reported maximum temperatures above seasonal averages. While most districts are experiencing highs around 35°C, Kalaburagi has recorded 36°C, with some areas registering up to 3°C above normal.

Factors driving the heatwave

Meteorologists attribute the unusual rise in temperature to a combination of global warming, low humidity, clear skies, and the La Niña effect. IMD officials have stated that maximum temperatures in coastal Karnataka are likely to be 65 to 75 per cent higher than normal.

Senior IMD meteorologist C S Patil noted that in northern districts such as Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Koppal, Raichur, Bagalkote, and Ballari, peak temperatures during April and May could reach a blistering 42°C to 45°C. Even Bengaluru, known for its moderate climate, may see the mercury rising to 39°C.

Red alert and health advisory

A red alert has been issued for most parts of north interior Karnataka, where the heatwave is expected to be most intense. Minimum temperatures are also likely to remain above normal in coastal and north interior regions, offering little respite even at night.

Authorities have advised citizens to be cautious, especially between 11 am and 4 pm when the sun’s intensity is at its peak. Health experts recommend:

  • Staying hydrated and increasing water intake.

  • Wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing.

  • Replacing hot beverages like tea and coffee with cooler drinks.

  • Taking preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.

While the current spike may see a slight dip in 3 to 6 days, the long-term forecast suggests a steady climb in heat starting March, requiring high vigilance across the state.
