Beltangady, Feb 23: In a remarkable display of quick thinking and medical expertise, a woman gave birth to a baby boy inside an ambulance while being rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru in the early hours of Monday.

The woman, identified as Leelavathi, a resident of Sudemugeru within the Beltangady town panchayat limits, was initially admitted to the Beltangady taluk hospital for delivery. After an examination, doctors advised her family to shift her to Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru for further care.

Following the recommendation, Leelavathi was placed in the hospital’s emergency vehicle and dispatched to Mangaluru, accompanied by two staff nurses.

Successful delivery mid-transit

As the ambulance reached Farangipete in Bantwal taluk, Leelavathi developed intense labour pains. Realising the urgency of the situation, the nurses on board, Sister Kumuda and Sister Soumya S, acted promptly. They successfully assisted Leelavathi in delivering the baby within the ambulance itself.

Both the mother and the newborn baby boy are reported to be in good health.

Praise for staff and driver

The presence of mind shown by the ambulance driver, Dinesh Gowda, has also drawn high praise from the public. Despite the emergency delivery mid-way, he ensured that the vehicle reached Lady Goschen Hospital in the shortest possible time for further medical attention.

The timely intervention of the nursing staff and the driver’s efficiency have been widely appreciated for ensuring the safety of both the mother and the child during the critical journey.

If she could deliver safely in a moving ambulance, I wonder if the referral to Lady Goschen was actually required.
