Udupi SP says man was mentally unstable in Kalsanka self-immolation attempt

Udupi, Feb 24: The police department is ready to assist the person who attempted self-immolation at Kalsanka junction on Sunday evening, said Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar.

Giving details about the incident, the police superintendent said, “On Sunday, February 22, around 6.15 pm, a person was found attempting to self-immolate at Kalsanka junction. He was identified as Sharanappa Basappanavar of Gadag district. He claimed that someone had assaulted him and tried to burn himself using petrol. Traffic police personnel on the spot, Lingaraju, and town police station officers, along with social worker Nithyananda Volakadu, prevented him and snatched the petrol bottle from him. Later, he was admitted to Government Hospital, Ajjarkad, and then shifted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, for further treatment. He is mentally unstable and had come to Udupi after having a quarrel with his relatives in Gadag.”

“He is currently undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital, and the police department is ready to provide any assistance to him,” he added.
