Chennai, May 3: Chennai Super Kings delivered a commanding performance to defeat Mumbai Indians by eight wickets in their IPL 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

Led by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and young talent Kartik Sharma, CSK comfortably chased down a target of 160 with 11 balls to spare after a disciplined bowling effort earlier in the evening.

Gaikwad anchored the innings with an unbeaten 67 off 48 balls, marking his second consecutive half-century, while Kartik impressed with a maiden IPL fifty, finishing unbeaten on 54 off 40 deliveries. The pair stitched together a crucial 98-run partnership for the third wicket, ensuring there were no hiccups in the chase.

At just 20 years and six days, Kartik became the second-youngest CSK batter to score an IPL fifty, behind Ayush Mhatre. Their calculated approach—rotating strike and capitalizing on loose deliveries—kept the required rate firmly under control throughout.

Despite wickets from Jasprit Bumrah and AM Ghazanfar, Mumbai never managed to apply sustained pressure. Earlier, brief contributions from Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel gave CSK momentum before the match-defining stand took over.

Earlier in the match, CSK’s bowlers set the tone by restricting Mumbai to 159/7. Anshul Kamboj starred with figures of 3/32, while Noor Ahmad chipped in with 2/26 on a tricky surface.

For Mumbai, Naman Dhir top-scored with 57 off 37 balls, while Ryan Rickelton provided a brisk 37. However, the innings lost momentum in the latter half, managing only 69 runs in the final ten overs after reaching 90/2 at the halfway mark.

CSK’s disciplined bowling, combined with sharp execution in the chase, sealed their biggest-ever win over Mumbai in IPL history. The victory also marked their third league double over their arch-rivals, following similar feats in 2014 and 2023, keeping their campaign firmly on track while pushing Mumbai closer to an early exit.
