Delhi HC pulls up WFI over Vinesh Phogat ban

New Delhi, May 22: The Delhi High Court has strongly criticised the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision declaring wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible for the upcoming Asian Games selection trials.

The controversy erupted after the WFI barred Vinesh from participating in the National Open Ranking Tournament held in Gonda, citing retirement-related regulations and anti-doping rules applicable to athletes returning to competition.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia questioned the federation’s decision and observed that preventing a renowned athlete from competing “speaks volumes.”

The High Court directed the WFI to allow Vinesh Phogat to participate in the Asian Games selection trials and also asked for the formation of a special expert panel to evaluate her eligibility.

The direction came after counsel informed the court that the Sports Authority of India permits relaxation of eligibility criteria in special circumstances.

The court also referred to Vinesh becoming a mother in July 2025 and questioned why she was declared ineligible in May 2026. The bench remarked that motherhood should be celebrated and should not become a disadvantage for athletes.

“She became a mother in July 2025. We are in May. She is a wrestler of international repute. Why can’t it be presumed that you changed it for her? Whatever may be the feud or dispute, why should the cause of sports suffer? Motherhood is celebrated in the country, should it come to the detriment of a person?” the court observed.

The WFI had declared Vinesh ineligible to compete until June 26, 2026, citing a mandatory six-month notice period under anti-doping rules for athletes returning from retirement.
