Sumit Antil breaks own world record at Para Athletics Championships

Bengaluru, May 28: Two-time Paralympic champion Sumit Antil shattered his own world record in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64 category during the 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships 2026 held in Bengaluru.

Representing Haryana, Antil produced a sensational throw of 74.82 metres to clinch the gold medal and set a new world record.

The achievement surpassed his previous world record of 73.29 metres, which he had set during the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

Maharashtra’s Sandip Sargar secured the silver medal with a throw of 62.88 metres, while Rajasthan’s Sandeep claimed bronze after recording 61.83 metres.

The second day of the championships also witnessed several notable performances across track and field events.

Paralympic medallist Praveen Kumar won gold in the Men’s High Jump T64 event after clearing 2.00 metres. Fellow Indian para-athlete Varun Singh Bhati finished with silver by clearing 1.84 metres.

In the Women’s 400m T20 event, Tokyo Paralympic gold medallist Deepthi Jeevanji delivered an impressive performance to secure gold with a timing of 57.84 seconds.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Dilip Gavit dominated the Men’s 400m T47 category, winning the gold medal with a timing of 47.64 seconds.
