Speculation grows over 'Jana Nayagan' release as censor process nears completion

Chennai, Jul 9: Fresh speculation has emerged over the theatrical release of Jana Nayagan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's long-delayed film, after reports suggested that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) process is nearing completion.

Buzz surrounding the film intensified after Canada-based distributor York Cinemas posted on X that Jana Nayagan would release in Canada on July 24. However, the makers have not officially announced a release date.

According to media reports, the production team has submitted all modifications suggested by the CBFC, and the certification process has been completed. The censor certificate is expected to be issued shortly, following which an official release announcement is likely.

Reports also indicate that overseas distributors have been asked to prepare for a July 24 release, although there is speculation that the film could arrive in theatres a day earlier on July 23. KVN Productions has not confirmed either date.

Jana Nayagan, promoted as Vijay's final film before entering full-time politics, was originally scheduled for release on January 9. However, the film became embroiled in a prolonged certification process after it was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025.

The examining committee initially sought several modifications. Following the resubmission, the certification process was delayed after a committee member reportedly raised objections, claiming certain scenes could hurt public sentiments.

The production house later approached the Madras High Court seeking relief, but subsequently withdrew its petition and agreed to have the film reviewed again by the revising committee.

The delay was further compounded in April when a high-definition copy of the film was leaked online before certification. Police later arrested multiple individuals, including a freelance film editor, in connection with the leak.

During a recent hearing, prosecutors informed the Madras High Court that the pirated version had allegedly been viewed by around 1.2 crore people before being removed from piracy platforms.

The film also became the subject of misinformation after a fake CBFC certificate claiming it had received an 'A' certificate circulated online. Authorities later confirmed that the document was forged.

While producer Venkat K. Narayana has previously expressed confidence that the film would receive its censor certificate soon, the reported July 23 or July 24 release remains unconfirmed until an official announcement is made by KVN Productions.
