Sensex, Nifty open lower as high crude oil prices weigh on sentiment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 27: Indian equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened lower on October 27, 2026, despite overnight gains on Wall Street, as persistently high crude oil prices kept investors cautious.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 122.37 points, or 0.17 per cent, to open at 73,484.38, while the Nifty 50 declined 44.4 points to begin the session at 22,708.80. In the previous trading session, the Sensex closed at 73,606.75 and the Nifty at 22,753.20.

The broader market showed mixed trends in early trade. The BSE Midcap Select Index fell 109.17 points, while the BSE Smallcap Select Index declined 63.88 points, or 0.77 per cent, to 8,251.52.

Among Sensex constituents, BEL, Power Grid, Eternal, Kotak Bank and NTPC were the major gainers. BEL led the advances, rising 0.91 per cent in early trade. Infosys, Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, HCL Tech and UltraTech Cement were among the laggards, with Infosys falling 2.18 per cent.

Market breadth on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) remained positive in early trade, with 1,937 stocks advancing against 721 declining, while 105 stocks remained unchanged.

Gift Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50's performance, signalled a weak opening after falling 101 points to 22,672.50 from its previous close of 22,773.50.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net sellers on October 25, selling equities worth Rs 1,462.49 crore. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), meanwhile, continued their buying streak, purchasing equities worth Rs 2,609.57 crore.

Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder and CEO of HST Wealth, said gains in US technology shares should be viewed as a global sentiment indicator rather than a direct signal for Indian IT stocks. He noted that domestic technology companies would remain sensitive to quarterly guidance, deal pipelines, client spending and margins. Sustained participation from banking stocks would also be necessary to validate the previous session's market recovery, he added.

Asian markets traded largely higher following a rally in US stocks, supported by optimism around artificial intelligence and improved risk appetite. Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 1,210.35 points, or 1.95 per cent, to reach 63,400 at the time of writing. South Korea's Kospi advanced 201.68 points, or 3.69 per cent.

However, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 103.81 points, or 0.45 per cent, while Shanghai's SSE Composite Index slipped 4.94 points, or 1.8 per cent.
