Udupi, Jul 25: “If we conserve the eco-environment, it will save us from environmental destruction. In order to overcome the worries of childlessness, I have planted 284 trees and nurtured them in my native village of Kedoor. It has been acknowledged by Indians and overseas environmental agencies. I have the satisfaction of doing my mite for Mother Earth,” said award winning environmentalist Salmara Thimmakka.

Thimmakka was speaking at the inauguration of Government First Grade College, Hiriyadka, on Tuesday July 24.

Thimmakka also planted saplings of different varieties at the college campus and spoke on the significance of nurturing plants to grow as trees that would conserve the eco-environment.

College principal Dr Padekal Vishnu Bhat presided over the programme. Students’ union leaders Samrudd, Reshma S, Mahesh Shetty, Chandrika Nagaraj, and Annappa were present.

Lecturer Shweta Upadhya, who bagged first rank in the history of Mangalore University, ‘Attimabbe Award’ winning lecturer Katyayini Kunjibettu were felicitated during the programme.

Students’ union convener Uma welcomed the gathering. Ranganath Shetty proposed the vote of thanks. Raveena Poojary and Supreeta compered the programme.
