Apple Plans to Manufacture Mac Computers in US

San Francisco, Dec 7 (IANS): Apple plans to manufacture some of its Mac computers exclusively in the US, according to Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook.

Cook made known the move of the tech giant company in an interview with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) anchor Brian Williams. A preview of the interview is available on the website of NBC.

"We've been working for years on doing more and more in the United States. Next year, we'll do one of our existing Mac lines in the United States," Xinhua quoted Cook as saying.

The interview is said to be Cook's first since he took over at the helm of Apple from its late visionary CEO Steve Jobs, who resigned in August 2011 and died Oct 5, 2011.

Apple's latest move reflects the pressure on American companies in terms of creating jobs at home as the unemployment in the country has been hovering around 8 percent.

In the NBC interview, Cook argued that the reason that Apple doesn't manufacture everything in the US lies in not the higher cost, but the country's lack of enough people with skills needed for modern manufacturing processes.

"It's not so much about price, it's about the skills," he stressed.

Cook didn't say which line of Mac computers or where these products will be manufactured in the States.

Cook also hinted in the NBC interview that Apple has big plans for consumer's living room, but not much was disclosed in this regard.

"When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years," Cook told Williams. "It's an area of intense interest. I can't say more than that."
