Mangalore: Rotary Sunrise holds talk on cancer awareness

Mangalore, May 14: A talk was organized on ‘Cancer awareness and prevention’ jointly by Rotary Sunrise Mangalore in association with Western Institute of Technology, Ave Maria Paliative Care and Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnkatte here recently.

Addressing the gathering, newly elected MLA of Mangalore J R Lobo said, “I am very fortunate to address a gathering in the premises of Infant Jesus Shrine. It is one of my first public talks after the election. I am very happy today,” he said.

Commenting on cancer J R Lobo said, “It is a dreaded disease. It needs to be treated in the initial stage. If neglected, the process of cure will be costly and painful. Such programmes are essential to create awareness. Healthy citizens can contribute more to the economic growth of the society," he said.

Dr Shivshankar Bhat, surgeon of AJ Hospital, oncologist Dr Manjunath, Dr Krishna Prasad, Dr Kamalaksha Shenoy and Dr Jessica Serrao were the panelists. Apart from simplifying the discussion on cancer, they answered all the queries posed by the audience.

In his introductory remarks, Dr Shivshankar Bhat said, “Cancer is a curable disease. There is huge of list of people who have overcome the disease. Confidence to face the disease is all-important as no medicine can replace that element. We will also hold another programme, and we will introduce to you so many people who were successfully able to fight cancer. With the latest technology, cancer is not at all a dreaded disease."
