Udupi, Jun 6: The district administration, Karnataka State Pollution Center Board, and Sarvajanika Sikshana Ilake, in collaboration with Women’s PU College, Udupi celebrated World Environment Day in the district at the college auditorium on Wednesday June 5.

The programme was inaugurated by Upendra Nayak, president, zilla panchayat, and the function was presided over by Prabhakar Sharma, CEO.

Nayak, in his speech, said, “Our environment is exploited to its extreme by human beings and not due to natural calamities. Man does not understand the need for nature and is very selfish in thinking only about himself.  Udupi CMC has taken marvelous steps such as banning plastic which is a boon to a better environment. Now people are beginning to understand that plastic harms nature. Hence, they prefer to bring cloth bags from home, which is a very welcome sight."

"Teachers are guides to students. So, they have more responsibility towards the society. They have to stand behind the students with prompt advice for a better future by creating environmental awareness,” he said.

Nayak added that Rs 20 Lac has been allotted for five gram panchayats in Udupi for waste management.

On the occasion, Nagendra Madhyastha, DDPI, said, “Education, agriculture, and forest are interlinked to protect agriculture and forest; children must be educated about the need to preserve them. They are the future of our environment.”

N A Madhyastha, former principal, PPC, said, “The celebration of different 'Day' feasts are adopted from a foreign culture. Importance should be given to the environment that comes from the heart which must continue and not celebrated or observed just for a day."
