Mangalore, Apr 4: A teenage girl died in an explosion resulting out of gas leak in an apartment at Kadri Kambala road here early morning on Friday April 4.

Bharati (14) died while her parents Shivananda (40) and Bhagya (35), and brother Anjaneya (15) sustained serious injuries in the blast.

Shivananda, from Haveri, is employed as a watchman at the residential apartments where the incident occured. He stayed on the upper floor while his family lived in a room on the ground floor.

Early on Friday at around 4.40 am, Shivananda sensed the odour of a gas leak emanating from his room and went to check. His wife and children were sound asleep. Shivananda entered the room and switched on the light, when all of a sudden there was an explosion in the room.

It is said that vapours from the gas leak had filled the room, and when Shivananda switched on light, it resulted in the blast. The entire room was in flames.

Bharati died on the spot while Bhagya, Anjaneya and Shivananda sustained burn injuries. They were admitted to a hospital.

Fire personnel rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames.

Kadri police are investigating.

This may have happened due to a defective rubber gasket on the inner diameter of the cylinder nozzle, if the cylinder was actively plugged to the regulator.

Most of the people are not aware that there is a small black coloured gasket on the inner side of the nozzle on the cylinder. If this is defective or worn out, then slight misalignment of the regulator will result in a strong Ethyl Mercapton odor(smell LPG as commonly known) due to leakage.

Remember, there should be no gas leakage when the regulator is hooked on the nozzle and in 'ON' position even if you try pushing the regulator in any direction.

This is very important for people to know and I had a similar experience a month ago, but I got the seal replaced in a matter of just 10 minutes.

It's not the question of lack of common sense. 4 55 am in the morning, at the heat of the moment anything can happen. WE can't judge on their common sense. After all he is a watchman serving for that flat. My sympathies to the family. Hoping that they are keeping okay after this tragedy.

RIP!! It is always advisable to turn off the valve before retiring for the night!!

Here looks like the rubber pipe was not a wire braided one, but an ordinary one, which caused the leakage!!

    MAY SOUL RIP.
BEING A WATCHMAN STAYS IN THE UPPER PART AND HIS FAMILY IN THE GROUND FLOOR.
GAS LEAK FROM UPPER PART MEANS MUST BE A FLAT OF ELITE APARTMENTS AND TWO SUCH FLATS OCCUPIED BY HIM MAY BE CHAIRMAN CUM WATCHMAN.

this happened at 4.45am today. Just 100metres from where i stay. The sound was horrifying. Even my apartment window pane vibrated. Horrible it should have been for the sufferers.

RIP, Lack of common sense resulted in such a tragedy.
Moral of the story is Whenever there is a gas leak we should not switch on the lights instead open up all windows & doors and vacate the affected area as soon as possible.
