Udupi, Apr 9: Fear and anxiety coupled with excitement gripped the students and staff at Manipal University when a leopard strayed into the campus here on Wednesday April 9.

It was initially reported that the animal was a black panther.

Sources said that the leopard had been spotted by the security guards near the campus on Tuesday April 8 night, and on Wednesday morning, they informed the forest officials after the animal entered the compound of the staff quarters.

Barricades were put up to prevent anyone from going close to the compound.

Though forest officials arrived at the spot, it is said that they were not equipped with nets, cage or other apparatus to trap the panther. People at the spot said that the officials had been waiting for the equipment to brought from another place.

The leopard was first spotted in one of the quarters but it soon left it and entered another quarters. It was lured to the backdoor of the second house with bones and chicken, and went it came out, the officials trapped it with a net.

It was then put into a cage and taken away.

ASF Satish Babu Rai and Sheena Kottary led the operation. The officials said that the leopard will be released into Kudremukh National Park.

Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah, circle inspector Maruthi Nayak, forest officer Keshava Poojary, University estate manager Jay Vittal, Manipal police inspector Ravi Kumar, reserve forest officer Prakash Poojary and others arrived at the spot.

A large crowd of Manipal students, staff and locals also gathered and eagerly clicked pictures on their phones and cameras.

Poor Leopard ,People themselves are responsible for the appearances of so called endangered species in the open spaces ,if people go on cutting the trees ,destroying forests ,in other words hijacking natural habitat of these endangered species,at the end of the day ,these poor animals have no option but to appear in the open spaces

Whenever a leopard has been located, people should crowding the area. This can be dangerous to both the people and the leopard. Kindly assist in clearing the crowds. After the capture, let the department folks take away the cat to wherever they intend to. Please dont crowd around the cage to see/photograph it. It stresses out the animal. Be kind, be sensible, at least this is what is expected from the staff and students of India's premier institutes. A lot of forests were cut, the hills were flattened to make space for your institute.

Nowadays when a Panther or tiger, leopard etc. are come into town in search of Food, its a big spectacle.Huge amount of People gather around to see.what in some decades when These wild animals are no more there ,our future Generation should go only to zoo or see in catalogues?but there living in forest also is not sure.first hardly forests, second no wild animals to hunt.sad.But we cant have These wild animals inmiddel of our living area.Forest dept.should think of some answer to this Problem.reduce wild animals and set them elsewhere, like in Ghats where Wildschwein to hunt or deers.

It reminds me in 1958, of a fully grown-up tiger straying into the compound and then resting inside the (old Fashioned) toilet of a very famous doctor in Bijey - Dr.Henry DSouza. When their servant went to the toilet, she got a shock of her life seeing and hearing the growl of this uninvited guest and ran for her life screaming so loudly that the tiger must have also got scared and started running around. Ultimately, it was a well known SHIKARI of those days who chased it and shot it before it could harm any of the bewildered neighbors or people in the locality.
Coastal districts and surroundings were known for the abundance of tigers in the forests, but with the large scale deforestation of the region .....they too must be feeling the pinch of losing their habitat and so roam around in open spaces in search of fodder.
After all what do they know whether it is a city or a town or a village...so long as it has place to move around.

When one starts to attend a course of study or is sent on assignment, he is given an orientation in a brief synopsis, the content, scope and outlook of the subject. Since these four legged visitors appear frequently in IIT, Mumbai and now in Manipal, I think they should include a chapter on how to protect oneself during such times, in the orientation lecture.
