Mangalore, Apr 10: The driver of a private city bus (route number 11 B) that plies from State Bank to Jalligudde was beaten up by a mob Kankanady Railway gate here on Wednesday, April 9 night.

The assaulters who came in a Swift car allegedly waylaid the bus at the railway gate and beat up Iqbal, the driver, accusing him of disclosing his phone number to a girl. The girl reportedly is a relative of one of the assaulters.

Even as the driver was beaten up, the angered group further resorted to breaking the windshield and the window panes of the bus. Circle inspector Hareesh Kumar rushed to the spot, but the attackers had fled by then.

Iqbal was admitted to hospital while the damaged bus was taken into custody by the police at night.

Iqbal claimed that he was unaware of the issue and had not given his number to any girl. "I was jolted by the sudden unexpected attack. Let the assailants produce the girl before me to reveal the truth," he said.

He alleged that circle inspector Hareesh Kumar directed him not to file a complaint, but the next morning on Thursday April 10, the same inspector hit back at him for not filing the complaint.

When daijiworld contacted Hareesh Kumar, he said this was an attack resulting out of personal enmity and that he told the driver to file a complaint. "But he (the driver) did not show any interest in filing the complaint at night. The assaulters waylaid the bus over petty personal issues. Why should the public face inconvenience?" he questioned.

"A complaint was filed on Thursday morning in Kankanady police station and FIR will be registered very soon," he added.

Bus strike

In protest of the attack, private buses plying in State Bank - Jalligudda route came to a halt on Thursday morning. Bus drivers demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers, and threatened to continue their strike till action is taken.

Corporator of the area Vijaya Kumar Shetty arrived at the spot and managed to convince the protestors. The strike was called off after the protestors were assured of quick action in the case.

Hundreds of commuters faced inconvenience due to the sudden disruption of bus services. Many were forced to walk or take other means of transport.

Though bus service resumed to normalcy later, the protestors have given the police a deadline until Friday April 11 to arrest the culprits, failing which they would go on strike again.

From the name of the victim driver it can be safely concluded that the attackers were right wing extremist goons.

this is not at all acceptable. we have seen multiple such instances where busses coming to a sudden halt. How can they do that. it's not that they drive the busses on their mercy kind of. It's a public service legally in place and they should be held responsible for such actions. Irrespective of the incidents, where it's drivers' mistake or he is innocent, that can be taken in a legal ways between him, bus owner and police. Why the hell they stop the bus service. they should be penalized for doing so. Imagine the unnecessary problems public might have faced. old people, kids, students, public returning / going to jobs... all are affected so much because of the the stupid decision on these drivers. So, police and RTO should bring a strong rule as no bus service should be halted in any of such incidents or occasions. Unfortunately, they will not take any such serious actions. That's why these jokers ( drivers ) are daring to do so... pity on ourselves...

The Private Bus drivers of DK & Udupi always resort to such flash strike for silly reasons just because they have monopoly in these two districts.
The best remedy is to nationalize all routes in these two districts.

If any innocent bus driver or conductor is beaten by any group then let the Driver, conductor, and the Bus owner can stop only their bus and give a complaint to police. Why all other bus drivers should join him ?

An attack on the bus driver is unfortunate. It shows the irresponsibility and breach of duty of our police. PCRs should keep patrolling instead of cooling their engines under the shade of the trees or parking like BERCHAPPAs at busy junctions, turning a blind eye to traffic violations and inconvenience caused by buses to other road users. However, who gave the right to the bus drivers to resort to flash strike. They are supposed to serve the people, not cause inconvenience to them. Causing inconvenience to commuters does not solve the problem. There are many civilised ways to protest. Flash strike is like ETTHIGE ROGA,EMMEGE BARE. The Corporator should have warned them of dire consequences in case of any future flash strikes.

if the girl was really into trouble then I think she herself should have gone to the police station and reported about this. whats the point in the goondas beating up the driver? if the issue was really true then let them produce that particular girl with the witness to prove that he has really given her his phone number. i strongly feel that the goondas should be punished as they are creating nuisance.
